The following, for me, is for those that have never served and yet PROCLAIM FOR ALL TO HEAR....what THEIR rights are...... as this appears to be true via snopes, I like it!!!
Nurse

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks.

Looking around, confused, they asked, "Ms. Cothren, where're our desks?" She replied, "You can't have a desk until you tell me what you have done to earn the right to sit at a desk."

They thought, "Well, maybe it's our grades." "No," she said.

Maybe it's our behavior." She told them, "No, it's not even your behavior.

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom.

By early afternoon television news crews had started gathering in Ms. Cothren's classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room. The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the desk less classroom.

Martha Cothren said, "Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you." At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it.

Twenty-seven (27) U.S. Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall.

By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned. Martha said, "You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it's up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don't ever forget it."

By the way, this is a true story.... If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you read it in English, thank a soldier. Next time you see a soldier be sure and THANK THEM for what they have done for US!

That is a good story. I'm surprised 27 vets could still fit in their uniforms. I'd have to lose a lot to fit in mine.

I still have my spit shined garrison boots, just cant wear em. (my field boots went over the phone lines at Camp Pendleton on the way out !!)

Great story, never saw it before.

Wish more would realize this country was won, and is sustained, with the blood and sweat of Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen.

How ya doin', AF Nurse?

I am hanging in there.....this week is spring break and I am on leave.... have done some home projects, spent a lot of time with the family, and today am loading my stuff for an overnighter looking for Rio Grande Wild Turkey, Wild pig, and/or the oppertunity to shoot an exotic (such as Axis deer)....exotics have no seasons and can be shot anytime if found....the only critter I need tags for is turkey!!!

After that, begins the rest of the process of work and prep for deploy in may.... going to the sandbox, probably for the summer. Should come back all nice and tan.....??!! Not sure how much riding I will get in between now and deploy, but that is neither here nor there....important to spend time with the family...... Congrats on your promotion!!! Another step in the great ladder!

Thanks a lot, I was a little surprised by it, but I was also due.

Good luck on the hunting, I haven't hunted in a long long time, it's always fun. Sometimes I miss it but mostly too busy. When I was in New Mexico (91-94) you could shoot an oryx (gorgeous African antelope with two very long antlers)in season with a license, but it was a lottery to get the license. That is the only reason I can think of to go back there.

Enjoy your family time, your kids are only small once. That's what it's all about, right? God willing, the riding will be there when you get back.

I guess you have quite a lot to do for deployment prep in your line of work. My job's the same, but the jets come back empty at the end of the day. Very cool. We have jets and about 700 folks deployed right now. We're on regular AEFs, so I'll be going over there sooner or later. Probably sooner.

See ya,

Joe <><

I left sunny Aridzona (DM) in late September for Pruem AS in Germany. In May we deployed to a FACP (Forward Air Control Post ) at Al-Jubail Saudi Arabia ('bout 75 k south of Kuwait). Being a desert rat from Phoenix and just coming out of Tucson I was pretty used to heat. We had probably 3-4 troops a day getting IV fluids for the first week. My shop and the motor pool formed a sand lot jungle basket ball league with games at high noon. Non of the ops pukes would come out and play.

I was used to deserts but SA is way, way different.

They imported sand to make the cement for our radar hill. We were literally surrounded by sand but the contractor explained that it was worn to smooth for the Portland to bind to. That weirded us all out! Especially since it felt like sand paper wherever it got into....

Our guards had these long ass rifles (longer than an '03) with fixed bayonets (no kiddin) but no ammo and the .50 cal was plugged with sand. The sad part is that we were not allowed to open the armory unless ordered to or directly attacked. Uh, can you please wait we need to get our BB's and guns out.....
The story line was that we were not likely to be attacked....Hmmm, is that why the Massad took out an Iranian strike team at a nearby Waddi (Oasis)?? We did get our weapons out...after the fact

In May it got to well over 100 during the day and dropped to the low 50's or lower at night. The sand was like powder and got into everything, wore out your boots (x3) in 90 days. Our turbines never had carbon build up because they were sand blasted every time we ran them. The Exducer blades were titanium and even those wore out! The JP4 was always dirty and we used diesel truck filters in the lines to help clean the crap out before hitting the fuel controls.

Still, it was an interesting place. A mix of centuries old with high rises next door. Mercedes and carts...

That sand sure would make nice glass though

Now, here is the kicker. This was in '85 when the Iraq and Iran were busy killing each other. We liked that Iran was getting it's but kicked and were feeding our radar shots to Iraq!!! We'll still be killing each other over oil long after we are gone....

Its amazing how there are no negative comments on this thread. I for one, am glad. Too many ppl take for granted what all of us have (even north of the border). My dad was in WWII, & though he never won the war single handedly, he was a contributer.
God bless true patriotic citizens.
