MOTOR OFFICERS FROM AROUND THE NATION WILL GATHER FOR THE SOUTHEAST POLICE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY COMPETITION
In the face of growing personal peril for those serving in law enforcement, Motor Officers from around the nation will unite in order to train and enhance their own personal safety while acting to raise funds for the families of officers slain in the line of duty. The Southeast Police Motorcycle Safety Competition will be conducted April 9-12, and will culminate with formal Safety Trials on Saturday, April 12th and is to be held at the Pompano Citi Centre Mall, located at the corner of Copans Road and Federal Highway, Pompano Beach, FL.
The Safety Trials is an annual police motorcycle skills event that benefits the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) and the Muscular Dystrophy charities. C.O.P.S. is a national organization that benefits the children of police officers who are killed in the line of duty. This event is a noteworthy fundraiser for these laudable charities and is also the largest police motorcycle safety skills event held in the Southeastern United States. It attracts a sizeable segment of the police community as well as the civilian public. The Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) and Northwestern University Traffic Institute Certified Instructors will be monitoring the course for instructional and safety purposes. The training courses are set up to enhance the daily riding skills of the motorcycle officer, acting to improve riding skills and competency. The courses are intricate and very demanding and are the same as those used in the Police Motorcycle Enforcement Rider School. There will be three training days available before the Safety Trials starting Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, there will be an optional "Fun Run," which actually simulates the motorcycle officer's daily riding skills. Motor Officers must participate in the Safety Trials to qualify for the "Fun Run".
On Thursday and Friday, 8 am to 4 pm, certified motorcycle instructors will provide focused training to any registered participant at the competition location, exact hours to be announced. This training will focus on safety procedures when maneuvering in a slow congested area (i.e., cone patterns), the course will be the designed patterns for the competition.
The general public is encouraged to attend and learn more about the initial and continuing rider skills training afforded motor officers. Attendance is free of charge, so bring the entire family. In addition, raffle tickets for a new 2008 Harley-Davidson XLH Sportster 883 will be sold for $2 each, with proceeds going to support the parentless children or surviving families of officers slain in the line of duty (Concerns of Police Survivors) and to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
