Never been to Oregon and I'm planning a trip to there in July. If anyone can give me some cool places to visit or ride I'd appriciate it.
Our plan now is to Start in Redding,CA and work our way up the center of the state, across to the coast, down the coast and back to redding.

I would suggest a trip out the Columbia River gorge to Multnomah Falls.

It's a very nice day trip and you won't be disappointed!

While planning my trip I hear about a road, FR-19, between Westfir and Rainbow. Does anyone know if this is a road for Harleys because it does not show this road on mapquest or googlemaps.

When going up central Oregon, I'd go up through Klamath Falls and circle around to Crater Lake (just as beautiful as Lake Tahoe and not near as crowded). Work your way up through Bend and Sisters to Mt. Hood and the Columbia River. Head west through Portland and out to Astoria (the top of the Oregon Coast). Then just enjoy pretty much the prettiest coastline in the US all the way down into California to Eureka and take 299 back to Redding.

Marc (FLHTBiker) can help you with little roads in and around this loop. I love Newport about midway down the Oregon Coast..want to retire there some day. You won't be dissapointed unless there is a bunch of fog (plenty of it in the summer time..late September, early October is the best time of year to avoid fog and traffic). The nice thing about going down (south) on the coast is you're on the coast side of US101 making it easier to pull over for breaks and pics and stuff.

It's been awhile since I've posted here...and "howdy" SK! My recommendations for the Oregon trip is a loop my wife and I did years ago from Grant's Pass--Roseburg--Bandon--Brookings--Grant's Pass. It's about 300+ miles and would recommend a couple leisurely days. The roads are great with quite a few logging trucks going to the coast, but they know when to pull over and let traffic through.

As SK said in the previous post, Bandon down the coast to California border is spectacular, and if you're doing it in the summer have your rain gear available as the mist/fog is pretty thick and constant.

We stayed at a friend's house in Brookings before it turned into a retirement community, and had a nice view of the Pacific from the guest house. The best part of the trip was going east on Hwy 199 east back to Grant's Pass. We paralleled the John Smith river in magnificient ancient everygreens. The water in the river is unreal bluish-green with deep pools dotting the river's progress to the ocean.

Anyway...the memories make one want to head back and re-enjoy it.

SK got it right. You'll love it up there. My best friend lives in Selma just out of Grants Pass. My son was born in Eugene. I'd be there now if I could have found a decent job. I hope to make a run up there in Aug. myself. Gonna take the Samurai tho so I can haul both kids and the dog.

Cowboy, You really need to stop and visit would love to meet up with ya.
As for a way to go screw the gorge its only got one really tall water fall and a ton of wind.

Go up I-5 from Redding to K-Falls by HWY 97 or cross over by Ashland on 66 or 140. From K-Falls go up HWY 97 through Bend to HWY 20 to Sisters (a must stop) and take and take a little known road 242 (really nice ride) to 126 go L and down to FR-19 you'll love it. Make sure you gas up in Sisters with a really full tank. From FR-19 go into Eugene and an alternative from going I-5 to Portland would be to take 99-W and you can work your way up the Willamette Valley up to Hillsboro and over to HWY 26 and into Seaside. There is a bike show and shine going on July 6-7. A great ride is going south on HWY-101 down the coast all the way down into CA. where you can cross back over to Redding. You'll be seeing the giant Redwoods on HWY-101 in CA. to Eureka. Bring your camera your going to really need it. Stop in Newport and go down to the bay front to Mo's for clam chowder and across the street to some really good beer at the Rogue Al Brewery.
It will be slow going down the coast because you'll be stopping all the time going WOW and taking pictures. The ride from Sisters over to 58 is just plain spectacular a must ride. Those two roads 242 and FR-19 will blow you away.

If you want to do Crater Lake you can do a loop from K-Falls off HWY 97 and back to HWY 97. There are so many excellent roads that I could suggest here in Oregon but you would never get home. I knew Marc would elaborate better on what I mentioned. He's spot on in Newport about going to Mo's (great chowder) and the Rogue Al Brewery (a multitude of selections to quench your thirst)..both must stops.

The gorge is nice I suppose if you have never been there. However its only good from The Dalles to Troutdale about 75-80 miles. The wind blows hard and we usually refer to it as a White knuckle ride. It really sucks riding into a 50 MPH head wind. Best time to ride it is in the very early morning hours when the wind does not blow. They don't call it the Wind Surfers Capital of The world for nothing.
There are just better places in Oregon to ride and see in my opinion which may not be worth much but I have been riding Oregon roads now for over 40 years.
