Riding to San Antonio via Las Vegas, Albuquerque and Roswell soon, have a Navy reunion thing there. About 3500 mile round trip for me. Any tips? Places to see or avoid? Not spending any real time in LV, just passing thru.

Got back yesterday afternoon. The trip was an adventure, with lots of good experiences and zero really bad ones. Met a lot of interesting folks and saw a lot of neat things. When I left, it was hot...got back and cold. Even have a new, fer real ghost story. I'll get to some of that when I have more time. Today, I have to wash Ol' Red, my ride!

The ride out was fine until I was leaving Roswell, NM. Got on Hwy 380 eastbound (75MPH two-lane) and couldn't get the bike over 65MPH). Got into Big Springs, TX and the Harley techs there at the "Oldest H-D dealer in Texas" found my vacuum line to the carb had cracked - they fixed it quick and I was good to go. Aliens in Roswell must have probed it overnight, as I had no trouble speeding into town the night before. Had some rain for the first couple hours, but was ready for that.

The ride out of San Antonio, TX was a bear. 60+ MPH headwinds made keeping 80+MPH on the road a gas-guzzling challenge. Ended up being so low on fuel I drafted a semi truck for about 30 miles, no further then 10 feet behind and sometimes a lot closer. Ended up putting 5.37 gallons in, but I did make it to fuel! Did the math, and was only making about 22mpg during that portion of the ride. Made it to Las Crueces, NM, and the ride to Kingmen, AZ was easy. Heading North the next morning, it was cold and colder (30's and then 40's) all the way home. Hot tub felt good at home!

In San Antonio I stayed at the Menger Hotel, next to the Alamo. Didn't know it had a rep for being haunted, and so was surprised when I got there and saw a "Ghost Tour" going on. Went to my room, called the wife to tell her I made it and then was telling her about the tour - OK, I admit, I was bad-mouthing it and the whole idea of ghosts there to her. Next thing I know, right after saying sh_t, the headboard on the bed violently twisted sideways and crashed down. Maintenance had to come in and two men put it back - it took some force to move it, for certain. I was nowhere near it (8 ft away, sitting in a chair while on my cell phone), nor was anyone else (the next room over was still empty). Learned my lesson, and didn't say another bad word about the "residents" after that - and nothing else happened for the next couple of days.

I ain't afraid of no ghosts - but I'll be more careful in the future.

One last cool thing to share: as I am a proud Navy retiree, I have military unit patches from some of the ships and places I was stationed on my vest. While traveling through the different Indian Reservations in New Mexico, the Navajo, Hopi and Hulapai Indians were all so forthcoming with there thanks for my service and their patriotism I was pleasantly shocked. All ages of these fine folks were so happy to greet me and talk - it was great! Also ran into Canadians and two seperate German families that were happy to meet an American Veteran. Pretty cool, and totally unexpected - at least by me. Made me wish I was a member of those tribes, instead of being just another mongrel American!;) I was very happy to meet 'em, and northern New Mexico is so beautiful....have to go back someday!

Yeah, did a LOT of the Riverwalk....or, I think I did, lots of bars along there, and hit more than I should probably have. Even did the boat ride thing, was worth it.
