Does anyone happen to know the part number of the starter for a 1998 heritage softail. Have to replace it. Darn spellcheck.

Go to Ronnie's H-D online. Use their OEM parts Manuel.

Pretty easy, just input year, make, model and then check the section you
are working in to find the PN, you'll also get retail price and a discounted
    price

    31553-94 $332.49 Retail, $292.99 at Ronnies.

I'd check the parts list, are you sure the whole starter is kaput?

You might just need a solenoid or rebuild kit PN 31604-91 $58.49

If you have a local starter repair shop take the old one there
HD starters are pretty good factory parts, HD doesnt' make
    all the parts.
Lucifer and Red Rider like this.

Yep,it's a Nipondenso(Denso) starter. Starter clutch or solenoid is usually all that goes in them. Any starter shop could rebuild it for you a lot cheaper than a new HD starter or order the parts you need to do it yourself. Price really goes up when you use HD part numbers at a HD Dealership

To expand further, are you sure its the starter and not a battery going dead or
a bad compensator, worn battery cable?

starters don't fail often on harley's

What is your starter doing? when you hit the starter button does it just spin and not engage? Been there done that.
