I can't start my 883, but do admit I have not even done the slightest bit of fault finding yet...just feeling to depressed about the whole thing.....

not depressed because it wont start...but because of what i did to cause it not to start.

At low(ish) speed I clipped a wall with the handle bars (throttle side) which spun the front wheel round, snapping off the lower stop on the steering triple tree, pushing the bars into the tank, and dropping me and the bike in the road. Also small dent in front mudguard and trashed the speedo which hit the top of the wall

no serious injuries, sprained ankle, bruise to the chest and sore hand, feeling like a right idiot.

But now the bike wont start. I had just bought a brand new factory speedo unit...but had not fitted it yet..thankfully... so plugged that in, and the ignition comes on, but hitting the starter button does nothing. Not a click or anything.

I know there is a run cut out for when the bike is dropped, but does it need a manual reset?

There is more to the lead up to this story, but I won't complicate this thread with that ...just yet

    Anyone any ideas ?

    Neil

Oh 2004 883 Sportster if that makes any difference

    Wow at least you're ok..

What you're talking about is called the BAS, or Bank Angle Sensor.

and does it need a re set?...I mean even the starter is not turning.

This happened last month...18th June...foot still a bit sore..nothing broken, but after a day of walking on it, it still get noticeably swollen.

Worse still I also tore a new pair of trousers i was wearing for the first time...about $200 US dollars worth of out door/ technical fabric trekking hiking trousers. Still the company sent me some fabric the same, free, to patch them up

I think when a bike has gone down you have to hit the kill switch, then switch it back to the run position, that will reset the BAS. Glad you're OK

    Found the problem.

    Pics to follow.

The complete throttle and brake assembly has moved along the bent handlebars...and ripped all the wiring clean out of the switch unit..

Also seem to have smnashed the reset ODO switch on the back of the clock, so an ew switch and handle bar units I think. I wanted pulled back bars or risers anyway...so when the new bars arrive it save me wondering what to do with the old ones....was going to have to extend the wiring loom and brake pipes any way, so it is not all too bad

Oh and don't forget the new fuel tank...need one of those as well. Think I have picked up a Custom Sportster tank...the bigger 3.5 gallon one..new and at a very good price.

But as you say, a bit excessive, just to justify getting a few new parts :)
