I needed a new rear tire. The OEM tire is the D401 150/18. I got 12k on and probably could have gotten another grand legally. But 12k is great! I must be slowing down. Decided to change to the American Elite. Got it from D Kirk very reasonable. Mounted it self and put the beads in. So far I put about 300 miles on it other than having a round cross section handling as opposed to having a worn flat profile I don't feel a difference. Sooooo, I sprung for the front one. Didn't need a front tire but what the heck. I'm getting 2 for less than a decker price for one. Now the bike is significantly handling different. That is for the much better. Quicker steering and very responsive cornering. The old Fatboy wants to be a sport bike now. I don't know why but the D401s never felt like this.

Ps: I use 4oz of dyna beads in each tire. Because of reading about "not recommended for racing " I decided that for today's ride to and from the club meeting I would do my best to drag race and some high speed interstate runs. I'm running a mildly modified 95 cu in with a 5 speed. It's not a drag bike or a GP bike by far but I couldn't get the beads to throw out of balance. They work great.

I stay with the factory model dunlap tires because of the dual compound and like you alluded to they seem to get pretty good mileage based on rider feed back.

That's why I went to the Elites. The factory put D401 model Dunlops. That was back in '05. The Elites come on the new touring models . The D401s are not dual compound.

The elites are just a "non HD marked" version of the HD factory dunlop,
DUnlop cannot sell HD branded tires they make to indy shops, so they came
up with the American Elite brand, same tire, same pattern, same company, no HD.

The tread pattern is similar but slightly different from the HD version. The tire was new in 09. Had to wait 2 yrs. before the Amer. Ellite was made availlable(2011).

Ok that explains why yesterday I was checking club members new ultra limiteds and the tread was different.
