My bike has the above slip on mufflers and everything else is bone stock. My problem is somtimes while in traffic driving as say 30 to 40 mph in the lower gears I get surging. I usually happens when I just increase the rpm instead of shifting up, but the RPM never anything above normal speeds, I just speed up to avoid changing a gear because I have to slow down right awa because of traffic.

Next is when I de-accelerate when coming off the tollway I do get some popping, from what I have read that is somewhat normal.

The bike always has crisp acceleration in any gear, also I have just had the bike out for a 300 mile high speed drive and have not experianced any blueing starting on any of the exhaust system.

Now after all the babbeling , would it be necessary to have to upgrade to a stage 1 kit and what ever else in needed, or is it ok to drive the bike like this. My gas mileage is a little over 200 mi till empty if that helps.

Does the stage one kit for the 01 88 Twin cam PN# 29489-99C include the download chip 32708-99b or do I have to buy a chip seperatly? If so is that the correct PN that I listed? Then after installing the above the bike must be taken into a dealer and have the computer updated?

WOuld anyone have the install instructions for the stage 1 kit, I would like to see what has to be done.

    TIA

    JR,

If all you did was change the pipes, you can probably get by without doing anything else..............................but, to take full advantage of those pipes and to get the best bang for your bucks, you should upgrade the intake side. To do that, you need to install a new breather system. The HD Stage 1 kit is exactly that, a new breather for $139. You can also buy the Ness Big Sucker here at Direct Parts, which is as good and some say better than the HD breather. I believe it sells for around $90.

The Stage 1 kit does not include any computer modifications of any kind. But, if you upgrade the breather, you definitely need to upgrade the computer. I don't know where you got the number for a "chip" 32708-99B. I don't have that in my catalogue. Anyway, there's no chip to buy. The HD dealer buys a cartridge with six downloads in it. They download one of these programs to your bike's ECM which upgrades your bike's fuel and timing performance to accommodate your new intake and exhaust capabilities.

The Stage 1 re-calibration (download) will cost you $149 plus labor of about $35 to $50 and can only be done by a HD dealer. That $200 combined with the HD breather of $139 and labor to install the breather brings the Stage 1 costs to about $400. But, you will see a noticeable difference in the seat of your pants performance.

If you will do a search on this forum for Power Commander you will find a wealth of information on a device which allows you to avoid paying HD for a re-calibration each time you make an upgrade or change to your bike's mechanical performance.

    Hope that helps.

Wow thanks for the honest straight forward answer! The PN 32708-99B if for the download for the HD computer, there is one on Ebay, the guy says its only good for only 1 download though. It looks to be still factory sealed.

You still need the dealer to do the download, normally you don't see those out on the market, even though sealed I'd be wary that it could be a used cartridge, don't know if you can reuse them or not but I doubt it.

You can go with a Digital Fuel Optimizer (DFO) from DP for about $150 or so and that will allow you to add fuel to the bike without having to do the stage 1 upgrade. The drawback is the DFO premise assumes all HD's are lean at all points and always need more fuel, this isn't true in 100% of the cases but in reality its pretty close at the stage 1 level.

Powercommanders are more expensive and they do more timing and fuel can be added or taken away so you can change the curve with the bike as you make modifications.

The only real reason to do a stage 1 reflash IMHO is 1) you'll never change anything else on the bike 2) you eliminate the low rev limit programming from the factory. 3) If you are going powercommander there are a lot of stage 1 maps available.
