01 FLHT Ignition Switch Removal

OK, I have read the service manual and performed the following steps:
1. Turn switch to ACC position
2. With a small screwdriver push in the button under the cap
3. Rotate the switch counter-clockwise 60 degrees
4. Remove cap

This did not work - Any ideas?

Make sure you've really got that button pushed in. I think you also have to push down on the switch when you rotate it 60 degrees. Always worked for me. I just took mine off a month ago and I don't remember doing anything else. It's not real easy putting it back together either. My switch wouldn't line back up properly. I was supposed to use a H-D tool to realign it but found that a 10" flat tip screw driver did the same thing.

Thanks for the tip. What a pain in the you know what. I think the screwdriver keeps slipping off while turning the iginition knob. I need to take it off to take the lower inner fairing plastic piece out so I can get to the top of the riser caps. My handle bars are loose - Got the front ones tight by removing the outer fairing but the back one has interference from the plastic piece that the iginition switch holds down.

What a strange coincidence. Same kind of bike. Same problem. I had just posted this question on another forum...check out the responses.

OK everyone I got the switch off and I really feel stupid. I was confusing the Ignition knob for the key. The service manual clearly states key not knob. Here are the steps from the manual - for brevity I left out some common sense steps. Remember do not confuse "key" & "Knob".

REMOVAL

1.To remove the ignition switch knob, first turn the Ignition Switch key to UNLOCK and then turn the knob to ACCESS. Depress the release button at bottom (left side) with a small screwdriver, and while pushing key down, turn 60 degrees in a counter-clockwise direction. Lift and remove knob.

2.Using a 7/8 inch wrench on flats, loosen switch nut and remove from threaded post of ignition switch housing. Remove collar and spacer.


Installation

3.Slide spacer over threaded post of ignition switch housing until it contacts decal plate. Slide collar over post with the tab side down (and forward). Install nut, and using a 7/8 inch wrench on flats, tighten until snug.

6.With the red arrow pointing toward the ACCESS position, install the ignition switch knob. Turn key clockwise to UNLOCK position and then turn knob to OFF.
