05 electra glide cuts out

Occasionally when I hit the starter, the engine almost starts then backfires. Also once in awhile when I am riding and the bike is at full operating temp. I will be at a stop light and when I go to take off the bike will cut out and even stall on occasion. The bike has Vance Hines slip-ons, air cleaner kit and Stage-one.
Does anyone have an Idea what would cause this intermitent problem.

If you do some searching on "lean pop" you will find that Power Commander and SERT mentioned a lot. You will also find explainations on the EFI we are currently stuck with.

Basically, the upload is designed for SE pipes / mufflers only. When you put the V&H on you opened up the flow of air and the engine went very lean again.

This is called lean pop and usually happens while downshifting, blipping the throttle of idle etc.

Best fix is a Power Commander or the SERT.

The starting issue can be several things. Battery state, starting method i.e. do not twist the throttle as the EFI takes care of it. In 1994, H-D changed the starter gear ratios and there have been issues since then.

The bottom line is that you need to make sure your battery is fully charged, do not twist the throttle and wait for the fuel pump to do it's thing. I always wait for the light to go out and the pump to stop before hitting the button.

Thanks, CD. I pulled a plug and it does appear I am running lean. I think I will purchase the Power Commander. Also what is a SERT ???
