Don't really know how to ask the question, so will just ask.
would it be stupid for a 68 year man to take a 1200 sportster on a 5000 mile road trip? That would be riding 2-up with a 64 year old better half.

I have no doubt the bike can handle it. Question is, can you ? I,personally, couldn't. Sporties have a pretty harsh ride compared to baggers and softtails. Of course you have to consider, How many mi./day, the physicle condition of both of you, the types of roads, etc, etc. I'm almost your age,I'm a pretty big guy, so I would say it's very optimistic at least. How bout you ride the Low rider, get "Other Half" a license so she could ride the Sporty? That sounds (to me) like a great ride together. JMO

Some pictures of you, yer passenger and how the sportster is setup would help
Some older folks ain't very old and don't iike the weight of the bigger bikes
I hope the sporty don't vibrate apart on you.

I would want as big a bike as could handle. And saddle bags on it to tote stuff like coats. and clothes
Unless yer gonna live buying clothes out of Walley World.

I'd try to take yer better half on a 500 mile trip and back before I tried 50000
You might be leaving the bike somewhere and riding a Bus back.
Remember getting there is one thing. But there and back

And what does yer tires look like. Changed yer Oil and lubed everything.

Thanks guys for all the input. Looks like the better half may have to keep working awhile. That way maybe she can afford us a Heritage, or Road King.
    LOL

Ya beat me to it chuck:roflmao:

Sporty might be a little hard on you for a long haul, short wheel base and light... kinda cramped for 2 up(unless both of you are very small) and the wind can blow you around more so than on one of the touring bikes...Road King IMO would be a better fit for you if you want to tour....:D
