Hey Guys HELP (Newbie here) :)

Brought my bike new in '85 and never had any problem starting it (of course you fool it was NEW)

I laid-up the bike FLHT Electra Glide Classic for about 5yrs.
Thank GOD the engine didn't CEASE

I rebuilt the carb as best I could but I'm not sure If I really did a good job.

    I've got a hell've time starting it.

Would it be best to buy a kit to re-jet or whatever. From what I hear the original carb that I have on the bike really STINKS :(

    What do you guys suggest.

I've heard that the S&S carb for my bike is one great carb.
    You tell me guys ~ like I said before I'm a NEWBIE and @ 70yrs. that's a rough 1.

    Thanks guys

Hi Schooner, I moved your message here (Tech Talk) since this carburetor is a butterfly style carburetor. CVP doesn't make a tuners kit for that older model but you could rebuild it with a gasket kit. It sounds like your original carburetor probably needs a major cleaning to dislodge the old lacquered gas from all the passages.

Replacement carburetors would include both the S&S Super E and Mikuni HSR42. You could also retrofit a CV style carburetor from a newer model (90-06) but it requires modifying the air cleaner backing and using a newer manifold or adapter. Replacing the carburetor can be costly so if you can revive the old carburetor, by all means go that route first.

Hey, schooner, since I have no idea how new this all is to you, I have to ask the most basic of questions: Did you drain the tank , replace the gas filter, and put new gas in? If not, do so and it may be fine. Five years is hell on gas, (and laquering is almost assured) but not necessarily too long for everything else, except the battery, of course.

a CV carb and manifold from 1990 and up would be about the best upgrade and least expensive....A rebuild kit and a real good cleaning would be in order....jet's are most likely plugged up with varnish...I'd also consider replacing your fuel lines too...

    Maybe Re-Jeting Wouldn't Be A Bad Idea

    Hey Lucifer :)

I was looking up the stats on my KEIHIN CARB.
    MAIN JET No. 175
    PILOT JET No. 50

I guess those numbers mean the same or whatever. So If I wanted to re-jet what really would be the reason i.e. Get More Fuel To The Carburetor ;)

And if I did want to re-jet what size jets would I order from Harley ;)
I guess I would have to replace BOTH JEST ~ YES/NO

All that re-jeting stuff is like reading Japeneese :roflmao: But if I have to
do it; I'll need you guys to see me thru it.

    Take care me man :)

    Schooner

I wouldn't change the jets or do anything
until it's running, these might just be fine
so don't change something and create a problem
    you don't have now LOL

First - No Smoking around the bike.
then, drain out the fuel, clean out with some Seafoam and fresh gas mixed together
(Seafoam is a gas cleaner you can get at any auto part store)

Remove the petcock, inspect screen, make sure tank is clean inside, replace any rubber lines like the fuel line, vac line if from petcock to manifold, and replace filter in fuel line if you have one.

Remove the carb and drain bowl, get a can of carb cleaner and clean out the jets, bowl etc. Be careful to not change the height of the float in the bowl, just make sure it's moving and clean..

Put back together and put in fresh high octane and then go to fire her up..

No soaking ? Just hit it with carb cleaner

    Hey hotroadking :)

O.K. the gas gets drained tomorrow; I'll pull the petcock out and take a look @
the mesh screen to see if its got any dirt in or on it.

I'll hit the carb with the carb cleaner and then put everything back. I'll put the new plugs I bought in her and pray GOD she FIRES-UP and RUN SMOOTH.

I'll let all you great guys know how to turns-out ;)

How do you like me engine stand . . . lol
    That's me the ol' fart . . . lol

    Schooner,
If you can find a shop that has an Ultrasonic cleaner, that would be the best way to get that carb really clean. the hot solution in the ultarsonic cleaner cleans better than any spray carb cleaner on the market and cleans all the jet tubes.

Anyway THANKS - 4 - the tip on the ulrasonic cleaning. I will look around for a shop that has that equipment for the future.
