    Good Afternoon,

I'm new to the forum but a long time owner of a 1987 FLHTC which I love. I broke the throttle cable recently and trying to replace it with the the right part for a 1987. Five years ago the carb was replaced with a Harley 27414-99C or 2005 Dyna.

My problem is that the cable appears to be too short yet the idle cable seems too loose? My shop manual is not helping much and I was wondering if I should go buy a cable for a newer bike that corresponds to the newer carb.

    I'd appreciate any input!

Find the length of your original cables..a quick inner net search found this...
    42.5" Harley Davidson OEM Length.
    90° Elbow.
    Replaces Harley Davidson #56328-81B

Then get a set of cables for 90-95 E Glides in that length...Barnett and Motion Pro are 2 of the better cable makers...hope this helps:)

    Hello,

To check just back off the idle return cable fully. Its the cable coming out of the throttle assembly nearest to you when sitting on the bike.

After that bring up the the other throttle cable adjustment until you feel by touching the butterfly as you roll the throttle yourself, that the Butterflyfly is fully open & will not move further. It should be about fully horizontal at that point. Depending on what you mean by "cable", but the cable casing length itself doesn't matter - it is the travel length, length of wire when cable casing is fully collapsed that matters.

    Cheers!!
    Anthony

Thanks everyone. Anthony, your right, my cable length is perfect...what i need is another inch of travel length. Since I did not install this newer carb I have no idea whether newer cables were used.

Since my idle cable is intact would this cable and, its travel length, match what is needed for the new throttle cable needed?

Ya can't stretch your cable an inch...In 1990 Harley went to the CV carb,so if you get a throttle cable for the 1990-'95 Electra Glides with the same housing length it'll have the proper travel length and will screw into your switch housings...
If you can adjust your idle cable so the throttle snaps back when you let it go,it's fine...if not get a set...

    Hey Lucifer,

I ordered another set of cables today from my local dealer for the 90-95 Electra glide as you and Anthony recommended. This should be the silver bullet, I hope!

Looking back on this since... I've had this bike, almost since day one and had I assembled an outline of this bikes current configuration of equipment this problem probably wouldn't have happened. If I had this in my bikes file; when something goes wrong I could quickly refer back to the bikes current equipment configuration and better anticipate problems like this before they happen.

Thanks again for the help and I'll let you know how the new set of cables work.

    Cheers,

    Paul
