    Hi,

My wife's 2001 Harley 883 Hugger is having some idling issues. I can get it to start with the fuel valve set to "Reserve", but not the normal "On" position. Once started I can switch to the normal "On" position and it will run for a few minutes then just stall. To get it to re-start I have to switch back to reserve. It will do this when the engine is both cold or warmed up.

At first I thought I had just a dirty carb so I proceeded to remove and clean, but my problem still exists. Let me also preface by saying this is a completely stock bike, original A/C, jets, and pipes.

    Things I have tried already:

    1. Removed carb and cleaned.
    2. Cleaned or replaced jets as needed.
    3. Replaced float bowl diaphragm and gasket
    4. Drained tank of old gas and added new.
    5. Re-assembled all components.
    6. Checked manifold gasket, doesn't seem to pinched or worn in any way.
    7. All vacuum hoses appear to be in good condition and connected properly.

Could it be the Fuel Stainer that's attached to the fuel shut off valve. This is the only thing I haven't checked yet. The bike sat for a few months so there probably is some debris from the gas sitting, but would this cause my problem?

    I'd appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Harry

I do not have much experience with with this, but I do know that the fuel valve is vacuum operated. It does sound like there is an issue with that fuel valve. I have a 96 883 Hugger. When I git it it was stock, but not anymore. what I did was take the old tank off and put a different tank on along with a different fuel valve. I would try replacing that fuel valve with something different. Does a friend have one laying around that you can borrow for a little bit?? A guy that I work with now has my old tank and fuel valve for his bike and he is having some issue. Sorry that I am not more of a help.

Oh yeah, how well do you think your accel pump is working??

the fuel valve is at fault....remove it from the tank and clean it....sometimes they wont rebuild, sometimes they do. when ya remove it you will see how it works...a short stand and one a bit longer. the short one is the reserve. on the front there are 2 screws that hold the valve in place. there is probably some trash in there. clean it and you should be good to go. sometimes after they are taken apart and cleaned they will leak around valve and hard to get it to stop.....be prepared to purchase a new one.....also a good time to clean the screen..........hope this helped a bit....let us know!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I went ahead and pulled the fuel valve. The gas strainer wasn't in too bad a condition. So since I had it off and rather than clean it I just replaced it. While I was at it I replaced the petcock as well. Put everything back together, gassed it up and took it out for a spin. Worked like a charm!

    I appreciate all the input.

    Thanks,
    Harry
