My 2002 Sportster 1200 Shop Manual shows a 42 low speed jet for both the Calif. and other 49 States but a 185 main jet for the Calif. carb and a 170 for the other 49 States. When I order the stage 1 carb kit what size main jets will come for a Calif. Carb., something like a 190 or 195? Why does the Calif. Carb come with a 185 main jet and not a 170? I will be putting on a high flow air cleaner and better flowing mufflers.

Leave the slow jet stock. The main needle size difference has to do with the Cal. emission laws so check to see if or what they'll let you get by with. I could never fiqure out why Cal. passed all those laws until last year when I went through there on my way to Oahu; but after a 9 hour layover at LAX, I found out you guys out there don't breath air just smog.:)

The California models came with a larger main jet in an attempt to overcompensate for the very lean mixture setting and lean needle used for Cal emissions. It seems the standards in California only regulated the idle and midrange emissions which allowed for the larger main jets from the motor company. That larger stock (California) main jet is too large on a Sportster and could eventually foul your plugs.

The key is to set up the entire carburetor correctly, not just trying to compensate with a single jet.
