Rode my 2004 sportster1200c to work (about 22 mi. ), she ran pretty good. Coming home later got caught in traffic, she got hot and really started backfiring and shut down. Don't know are there any of the sensors that would cause this or is it just carb? I installed stage one upgrade, cv ductor, ithas aftermarket less restrictive exhaust. The slow jet is 46 and the main jet is 185.

WOW, 3.5 turns is a long ways. What happened there sounds more like a head gasket going. Just a thought...

Get the bike warmed up as much as you can. Use an unlit propane torch but the gas flowing. Bring the propane torch up to the rocker area and where the head meets the jug. If you experience the bike increase in rpm, then you will know that you have a head gasket that is out.

Just curious, why such a big pilot and main jet??

3 1/2 turns out with the mixture screw would indicate you need a larger pilot jet,but I can't see that...check for intake leaks with the method JB described...my guess is you have an intake leak and it got more severe when the engine got really hot...mixture screw should be between 1 and 3 turns out...less than 1 you need a smaller pilot and more than 3 you need a larger one but wrong pilot isn't your problem...

I recently replaced the intake seals, it improved the situation but did not cure it. Thanx for all the input, but I'm puttin her in the shop.
