2006 883 custom carb tune

    Hey guys! New to the site as a member but have read a few threads that were informative and answered by people who actually seem to know what they're talking about, so wanted to post here to help clarify the proper things needed for optimal tuning of my carb.

    I have a '06 883 custom with SE intake and VH exhaust. The carb was left stock and overall the bike runs okay, but looking for a little more performance and hopefully eliminate or reduce the "lag" or "burp" just off idle.

    Ive seen many videos and posts on ideas to tune the carb, but wanted to get clarity on what is the actual best setup regarding:

    - Slow jet - stick with stock 42 or move to a 45?
    - Enrichment screw - 2-1/2 or 2-3/4 turns?
    - Needle - to shim or not to shim?
    - Main jet - what size is best considering my current setup and proposed other carb updates?
    - Slide spring - nip one full turn off? more, less, nothing?
    - How bout the slide? Im seeing concepts for drilling out the rear hole in the slide and filing down the edges. is this necessary or just a gimmick?

    Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

    Don't nip the spring

    DO NOT drill out the slide hole, it's an old trick that causes problems.

    In the casting of the slide sometimes the hole was partially blocked with
    production slag, so "cleaning" it up with a drill bit was ok, but that morphed
    into "bigger must be better", it's not, if the hole gets too large the slide will
    hunt up and down and cause you problems.

    Turn in the idle screw GENTLY until it bottoms, do not tighten, just
    feel it touch, then back out 2.5 turns to start, adjust from there.

    As to jets, Ken would know whats best for an 883
