If you're thinking about a radio equipped bike when 2012 models come out, HD has just announced this in a "advisory panel survey" recently.

At Harley-Davidson, our hearts go out to the people of Japan and our community of riders there who have shown great resilience through a very difficult time.

These recent events have had a global impact on businesses including Harley-Davidson. In particular, these events have severely disrupted the supply of electronic components around the world, as 60% of the world’s supply of integrated circuit components are manufactured in Japan.

While Harley-Davidson motorcycles are significantly made up of parts sourced and assembled in the United States, a limited number of small components – like some electronics – are sourced through world-leading suppliers outside of the U.S. For Harley-Davidson, the events in Japan have affected its supply of electronic components that are used in the American made premium audio systems included in select Touring models. The radio components in Electra Glide, Road Glide and Street Glide Touring models will not be available for 2012 models for approximately 6 months.[

You must be on that panel to, I've been on it for 2 years now. And, yes you are correct due to the Japanese problems the radios will be at least 6 mo. back ordered. Don't know if I would want one of the first ones put out when the Japs start production again. Maybe its time to start looking at building them here.
From the survey I answered last night it looks like a strong possibility that HD is going to have the 103 as a stock motor in their line up for 2012.

That was a question on the survey..if HD offered a Ipod with XM radio plus $500.00 would you buy a 2012 and wait 6 months then have your dealer install the radio when it came in. Me I said no, would want it now and what's the quality going to be like? I to think its time to build one here in the USA. :)

Stands for Harmon Kardon, that's the radio name in the HD bikes now. Been a really good radio I have had no problem with mine and the quality is good. If they are made in the USA then lets get all of our components from here in the USA. :)

Harman Kardon has always made high-end audio products right here in USA. Much better quality and durability than any of the Japanese bike systems and even the big BMW's in my opinion. I have a HK stereo in my home with Bose speakers--top notch.

I think they should keep all components made right here in this country. I remember years ago when I was working for a Japanese company (Epson) made printers and computers for a short while. All of their components were from other Japanese companies and they had a lot of problems. The computer division went belly up. But every component had to be from a Japanese owned company so that they would support the mother land, I didn't last long. :D

I read somewhere that all circuit board manufacture is now done in Malasia, Singapore, India, and even Thailand. Don't think any of that type of component comes from Japan anymore either. 10 years ago, 80% was made here in US.

You'd think there would or could be an American or Canadian company that could supply HK with circuit boards for their radio's...but I guess it's cheaper to import components and they are an International Co....

Good link Lucifer. If Sydney Harman was still around, I'd bet ALL ther components would be domestic. No substitutes!

If that $500 stereo was made from all American parts it would become a $1500 stereo.
And probably not be as good.
I think we should buy American when we can be lets be a bit realistic. The American work force thinks they are worth at least twice what they are worth. The People that run the American companies think they are worth ten times what they are worth.
Other countries have a more realistic value of there worth.
