In the Troubleshooting Section of the Service Manual it lists 5 possibilities for knocking or pinging
    1. Fuel Octane rating too low
    2. Faulty spark plugs
3.wrong plug for the kind of service
4.Excessive carbon deposit on piston or combustion chamber
    5. Ignition timing advanced due to faulty sensor inputs(MAP or Crank Position Sensor)
Hope this helps, you should pick up the Factory Service Manual and Parts Catalog and with all the sensors and stuff and EFI the Electrical Diagnostic Manual, which some guys that have em say it's excellent.

First thing I'd do is find another shop, if I read this correctly you bought and paid labor on install for a primary chain adjuster that wasn't needed, a stator, regulator, fluids etc for something that wasn't needed.

There are a few simple tests to check a stator and there is absolutely no reason to change those parts out for carb farts or a bike that dies unless the charging system is out.

You have a carb, if the bike is to run it needs

    Fuel
    Spark
    Compression

Get a compression tester from an autoparts store they are not expensive
remove air cleaner cover, remove both plugs, put tester in front or rear, open throttle 100% crank over motor about 4 to 5 pulses will have it at max and record numbers should be 150 to 170 depending on the build and both cyl should be within 4 to 5 psi of each other.

    Check spark at plugs

    Check Fuel,

If you're getting all of them the bike should run.

A Bad BAS will cause this as well (bank angle sensor)

    Find a better shop....

the charging system did crap out..then it killed the vss in the process.. ive done compression test and it came out 125 on one cylender and 130 on other.. but maybe i didnt check it properly.. i will check it again.. where is the BAS located? and is it possible that it maybe killed sensors when charging system failed?:witsend:

Did you try changing advance curves on the ign?? the 1st setting has a fast rise to full advance, the 2nd is a little slower, and so on. I set my evo on the 3rd. setting to take away the pings.
When the Alternator went south on ya ,it could be possible it surged and fried some sensors before it died, but you would think if that happened it would have blown some bulbs too:devil:

OK didn't read where that stuff went bad on the charging system.

    ping and knock

i have a 2000 night train with a 107 screaming eagle kit. it runs like s--t and is hard to start if the gas is of poor quality. i add lucas octane boost to help, but it's not a complete cure. i have been told that premium gas sits longer than 89 octane and loses it's octane rating. i have been told it would be better if i ran 89 and then added the booster. i haven't tried this yet.?? if i am lucky enough to get good fuel, no pinging and what a ride. if it is bad, i also get a vibe in the bike. good luck on good fuel. gabby:witsend:
