Hey everyone! I have a 1972 xlch Ironhorse. She's a kickstart. Let me tell you, I'm a small woman and its a pain in the butt to start this baby. So I am interested in putting an electric conversion on her. Could anyone help me with this? Please???

    Thanks in advance.

Try going online to: V-twin manufacturing.com. They do have a Sportster electric start conversion kit for your year. You'll also have to change your oil tank. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I will try that all out. I really appreciate it. However its gonna cost a pretty penny. So I might just stick with the kick start. Anyone have any tricks to make it easier for me? I prime it, I throw my whole body into it. But I still seem to have a hard time doing it.

sportsters have a reputation for being hard to start. keep it in perfect tune, and be sure to kick it all the way through, this will help prevent "sportster knee". every bike will have its own method of a start routine. once you find yours, and if you keep using it, you should have little problems starting.

maybe a couple of bricks in your pocket????:D:D:D

    welcome to the forum!!!!

I got it a few months ago. I took it to my mechanic because I had to get new tires on it. (she still had the original tires from 1972 still). he did a tune up and all that good stuff. It starts fine, I just have a hard time doing it.

Ive been shown numerous ways by "uncles" of mine, (older biker men who have "adopted" me). I just cant seem to get the knack for kicking her.

Do you kick it side saddle or over the seat? Park the rear wheel against a curb and try kickin it from the right side while on the ground. This will give you a little more travel through the kick if you are tall enough.
Or always park on a hill and 2nd gear bumpstarts work well!! :roflmao::roflmao:

Johnny: Lol Ive usually been able to do it by thinking of my ex. That usually does the trick, but it still takes me a few tries.
Bluepearl: I usually do it over the seat with my left foot up on the peg. I have tried kicking it standing beside her, and sidesaddle. I'm still having difficulty.

I think sidesaddle will be your best bet. Try typing on google: kickstarting a harley on You Tube. There are several examples of kickstarting a Sportster by ladies.

Josh: Thanks I will look that up.

My other issue is, what if she stalls while I'm riding her. I need to be able to kick her quick to get her started. Anyone have any advice for that? (My bike is new to me, I am used to elecrtic start bikes)

Decompression valves will help. You set them open, kick it, it starts, then the valves automaticly close to ge full compression.
