I recently put this bike back on the road after sitting for five years. I put about 200-250 miles on it and this morning while riding 20+ miles to work, the idle speed suddenly increased. This bike has a rigid wire throttle cable, desined with no return spring. I thought perhaps the clamping bolt at the carburator had slipped on the cable wire and was preventing full return to idle, but that does not seem to be the case. Does anybody have an idea why carburator settings would suddenly change. There are no sensors or electronics to screw up.

Hello there Cameroon, you didn’t mention if you cleaned out that gas tank and carburetor before you fired it up. If it has been sitting for any length of time, (several months) you must drain the tanks and carburetor, the tanks and carb are probably full of crud, and check any rubber, namely fuel lines and tires. Also check for intake leaks, along with any nuts and bolts.

    Lube er' down!

As with all cables, sometimes a little light lube (WD-40) shot in the cable housing could help decrease friction or binding. Can't hurt to try!

    73 FX Idle

There is an inline oil filter showing no crud, but I didn't check the carb bowl. It ran fine the first couple hundred miles.

Start it up and get it warm, with idle at 1500 or so, spray carb cleaner around the intake to head seals, if the idle changes then you've got an intake leak, check where the carb mounts up to the intake as well.

If you were not moving the throttle and the cable is good and seated properly it's possible it has an intake leak. the rubber seals don't last forever on these things.
