73 ironhead

    anyone good with troubleshooting a 73 ironhead got one started back firing through exaust. also need help ajusting s&s super b carb on bike and battery wont stay charged it had a dead cell in it put new one on rode fifty miles drained battery wont kick back up. was told anytime u have battery off or sat awhile u had to polarize the generater

    Welcome ,I would first start by fixing the short , & go from there , have you checked the brushes in the gen yet ?

    Backfiring through the exhaust could be from a too rich mixture and unburnt fuel is igniting in the exhaust pipe...

    Rebelrick do you have a service manual for your bike ,if not find one ,it's been a long time since I had a sporty & it was a 68 900 XL , when the gen went south it started to eat batterys & back fire a bit lost of on time spark ,I don't know crap about the S&S carb , :eek:
