I am going thru some wiring on my 73 and want to install a starter button. I really need a simple diagram to show me how to wire this into the bike. It will be mounted above the solenoid. Do I need a relay/breaker? I do not have blinkers/horn/kill switch (other than Key switch) or anything else I did not like on it. This is a simple, down to earth FLH and I want to keep it that way. Please help me. I have the button and need to know how to wire it up.

    Thanks,
    EZ

it depends on the amp load the button will handle. i would use a small relay available at an auto parts store to handle the amps, and use the button to activate it........

Yep, if it's a small button you intend to mount on the handlebars or some such You'll want to add a relay.
Very easy to wire it in, finding a place to secure the relay out of sight will be more difficult.
I added one to my SuperGlide for a louder higher amp air horn and put the relay inside an opening in the fuse caddy.
This is about as simple as you can get, Relay Wiring
Now on my old '66 FLH I had the switch wired direct but it was a heavy duty switch mounted just under my seat on the left side between the battery and the solenoid. Never used it though. that old fat boy was so easy to kick start I didn't even think about the starter much.

    Yep good diagram...

that relay would be best, any parts store will have one.

Or, not sure what starter you are running but CCI and Drag
sell Starter Solinoid buttons that bolt on the end of the starter simply replacing the stock
    end cover.

No wires etc, you will just turn on the ignition, reach down and
press in this button and the starter engages. Pretty clean

Thanks for the replies...that diagram looks good. I have a simple marine starter button that I picked up at a parts store. What size relay should I buy? Also that diagram doesn't show where to put the button...'

    Thanks again,
    EZ

yes for the relay on a starter solenoid 20 amp should be plenty.
Basically what you are doing is adding a relay to a relay (read solenoid).
Make sure to put a fuse in the line as shown.
What is the amp rating on that marine momentary contact switch? If it's 20 amps or higher you can forgo adding the relay.

I spoke with a mechanic friend and he said my button is big enough to use without a relay...I appreciate all the help and info on this matter. I will be back I am sure cause I am not going to stop riding the old bike.

    Thanks again,

I would never put a switch to a power source without a relay...
its $5 at a parts store, any car part place has them... not worth
    burning up a switch...

If i was goons do something like that I would just put the butto on the end of the starter. One those mounted to the endplate of the starter. The button just pushes on the contacts inside the starter.
