OK guys, got a buddy at work has two bikes, one is a 88 Heritage, mostly stock has not been ridden this year. Says it will not start, not getting a jet or spray of gas when he rolls the throttle. Said he sprayed gas in carb and it fired, then stopped. Said he took line loose and gas flowed out.

What should he look for? Any suggestions? Told him I would post this tonight as there were some guys on here knew their stuff.

    thanks

Bad gas? First thing I'd check on a bike that hadn't run for awhile, I'd drain that tank and put some new stuff in...even though he said he wasn't getting fuel, he may have just not seen it if his eyes are getting old (like mine). Clogged fuel filter? That would be next, as he could have rust in the tank. After those two quick and easy checks, I'd pull the carb and check the rubber for holes/cracking. Thiis should be an easy fix, though, as all he needs to get is good fuel into the carb, and there just aren't too many things in the way of that happening.

Did he say if he turned the petcock
On & had gas glow ? Or just from the fuel line ? 88 is before the vacuum carb , do i'am thinking cloged filter in tank , drain tank & remove petcock , it has a long screen / filter on it

Take the line off going to the carb to see if gas flows freely threw it.

If it does he probaly has a stopped up low speed jet. A stuck needle valve or a stuck Float.
    You ain't giving enough information.
The Reformulated gas you guys like so much don't last very long anymore.

You need to keep StarBrite Startron in it if yer not going to ride it.

The ethanol in the reformulated gas attracts water.

Yea, knew it was not enough info...just spoke briefly at end of day about this. I didn't ask him had he cranked it at all this year. I will pass on the comments thanks. He did say he took the line off to the carb, so likely one of the other suggestions.

    thanx

Well if'n ya do redneck math and the petcock is on and no gas comes out.
You know where to go from there.
Take the gas cap off and git a flash lite and look inside.

More Redneck math, Don't strike a match and look in ....:D

Yer pretty much got it figured out from here.
Lots of time the petcock is plugged.

What ya ain't gonna go over and help a buddy out......:cussing:

I sounds more like that his accelerator pump is toast. First follow all of those other things that were suggested and then start with the accelerator pump. :D
