I have an 2004 883 that I have had a lot of problems with backfiring through the carb right off of idle. The bike is all stock. I have have tried adjusting the idle mixture screw and changing the slow jet up to a 45. Going to a 45 seemed to help with the backfiring, but now I am having another problem. Once the bike is warmed up it begin will begin to run really rough, almost like it is missing right off of idle. Once the bike cools down it will run fine again. I have also changed the plugs and wires. The bike always runs great at idle and if I can get it past the rough spot off of idle when it is warm, it seems to run fine towards full throttle. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

also check for air leaks - plenty of posts on this problem - lots to learn and if you don't have a HD manual - ya need to - best money you'll ever spend on your ride.:)

I have the same type of issue, but a little different. Pretty much every time I start to ride, I get a little bit of backfiring or carb fart. For me, this only happens when the bike is cold, like when I take the bike off of choke, then start out, usually it will carb fart only when I am going from 1st to 2nd. After that, it goes away.

I am not sure what I have in it for jets, other than I know that they are 1 bigger than stock. (Different set up).

you should always let the bike warm up before taking off on it...........actually any fossil fuel burning engine should be warmed up.................

I was specifically told by the guy that did the engine work for me not to let the bike idle for a long time, even if the choke is on. Fresh top end.

Johnny - A 5 minute warm up - then keep the rpm's down to about 2500 for a mile or two and you should be good to go. The HD manual also lays this out as the way to pamper your ride - it gives the oil time to warm up and get to where it's suppose to be before ya hammer on it.
I know that doesn't happen all the time when ya git in a hurry but without oil to the top end ya will be doin a lot of fixing down the road that posiably could have been avoided.

usually I do not have that problem long. It usually does it the very first time I run through first and second. After that, no more. I am nice to my ride for about the first mile. After that I am not even that much harder on it.

I am no expert in this field. I have an 2006 883 that I bought used. Someone messed with the carb by adding a dynajet kit. I had the sportster cough and also something of a surge problem. Turns out the jetting was all wrong and someone drilled out the vacuum hole in the slide big enough to drive a truck through. I went to a 180 main and 42 for the other jet. Also replaced the slide with a stock unit. Worked like a charm. Art might want to chime in. Lots of posts on this topic. LEAVE THE STOCK CV CARB ALONE.

well leave it partially alone LOL

Typically the main is fine for pipes and a filter as there is no EPA test for WOT

Bumping the pilot jet one size,
    change the needle
    leave the slide alone
warm up and adjust the idle mix screw is all you
    should have to do.
