I just cleaned the carb, and now it runs backwards at shut off when hot. My Haynes manual says nothing... I'm hoping this course of action will save me the trial and error I'm looking at...

First I would throw that manual away. I had one of those and I did not like it very well. spend the money and get a Harley one.

I've seen 2 strokes run backward but never a 4 stroke.
The 2 stroke was somethign to do with the ignition be set up wrong.

Just a few questions to maybe help see the conditions. How is the bike running when riding? When you say runs backwards, do mean “runs” or just rocks backwards like a cough? How do you know it’s backwards, do you have a belt primary or is it in gear with slipping the clutch?

not uncommon in a 4 stroke.......older cars do it sometimes. it may not be running backwards, but may be "dieseling". it is running on hotspots left on the pistons from poor gas. the deposits get super hot and when the ignition is cut off, the gas remaining ignites on the hotspots and keeps running...but very poorly.......
