Anyone change the primary belt on a 91 Ultra. Friend of mine just called and wanted to know if he could do it. I told him first thing is get the service manual and secondly I have not done it on one of that vintage. Anyone ever change it and if so how difficult of a job is it.

havent done one on an ultra.......but is a pretty straight forward job......it is cheaper to go with the narrow belt and run the stock cover.....

Chuck he broke the belt and needs a new one.

Don't know if it had a chain on it before. Have not even seen the bike yet. Its not the drive to the rear wheel belt, that one is still a chain.

it should have a primery chain unless someone in the passet has changed it to belt ,& if he broke a primary belt it's eather real old or it 's not lined up right , But like you said have him get the servive manual

He says he can't afford the $800.00 the dealer wants to install one. Pretty steep and I would do it myself, but this guy is not very mechanically inclined and has no tools. He has a neighbor who says he is a mechanic and can do it. I'm staying out of it otherwise he would be here all the time.

I was looking for info to E-mail him to help his neighbor who has never worked on a Harley.

Sounds like it was switched around for the worse...'91 Ultra and all of them for that matter had a chain primary and a belt secondary.
One possible reason for an enclosed belt primary to break is no compensator sprocket to absorb the "shock" of the crank and heat build up due to not enough ventilation to cool the belt, which will soften it....then BANG....shreds of kevlar all over the inner primary and a no go bike....seen it happen a few times and the fix is going back to the traditional chain primary set-up(IMO the Best) or add spacers between the inner and outer primary to allow airflow and a vented derby cover and inspection cover...open belt primaries work OK enclosed ones not so good.
HD tried a belt primary with the Sturgis and went back to chain....ever wonder why??:devil:

Should not be that difficult, any more so than a Primary chain setup and...

no fluids to leak! a plus..

Does he know who manuf the belt setup ?

We are talking about an inner primary belt not the belt to the rear wheel correct?

:roflmao: All he knows its a Harley he wouldn't have any idea who made it and I have not looked at the bike.
You should see his 88 Goldwing, what a nightmare, very scary and even comes with those retractable training wheels that work sometimes. :roflmao:

He is a nice guy but if you ever volunteer to help him watch out as he'll be living at your front door.

Yea, but Cardboards bike I'll bet don't look like its held together with bailing wire. I don't mind helping someone but being used is not helping its being abused.
