I have a '92 Heritage, I'm getting some oil blow back at my oil tank around the oil cap/ dip-stick. It's a crank case breather and has the original air cleaner assembly (the head breather holes are sealed with solid bolts), sometimes when it sits a while it will pump oil out the case hose to the air cleaner back plate. I'm wondering if I have a crankcase vent problem, since I just had the top-end off and have new piston rings. All the aftermarket venting systems I've seen are for '93 and newer. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Is there a PCV valve on my bike somewhere?

If your getting oil in the air cleaner, then I would guess that the original breather assembly is probably still on the bike. The "solid" bolts are not actually solid, or at least should not be. If you take one out you should see that it is drilled out through the middle of the bolt with a whole that allows the oil to run through the tube and into the back of the air cleaner assembly. If they are solid, then you could certainly have some problems. I would also check to be sure the oil isn't over filled. The cap itself may not be fitting tightly enough either. It is 13 years old.

'92 is still a crank breather not a nose breather. Nose breathers started in '93 and the XL in '90. We have come across a few '92 models with both during development of "The Cure" vent system however. If he has the OE air cleaner there is a hose running up from the crankcase vent hole just inboard of the oil pump to the back of the air cleaner.

You can vent to ground using a filter and a short hose and install an after market air cleaner or just plug the hole in the back and leave it alone.

Make sure you are not over filling the oil bag! Check the oil level after the engine has run for a while so it can pump the oil from the crankcase back to the bag.

If you are sumping up after a couple days of sitting the check valve needs to be reseated.
