99 Harley Road King, no crank

    Hey Crew, My 99 Road King just stopped running. It's a carburated model, I have a new battery and circuit breaker, It won't crank over via the switch, but if I jumper the starter motor, it cranks fine! what could I be missing? Thanks for any info. D.L.

    Did ya check your fuses? Under the left side plastic side cover. Could be that simple. Believe it is a 50AMP

    I found the fuse block with the five 15 amp fuses, and they are all good, checked with test light. I didn't see any large 50 amp type fuses. I traced power to a part mounted under the fuel tank at the front bottom of the frame that has four large black wires going into it. It is aluminum, and has cooling fins on it. The power goes into one side, but nothing comes out the other side. The connector was full of oil and water, and looked like possible heat build up. I don't know what the part is called, some kind of controller? It obviously gets warm to need heat finscat into it. Thanks for any help.

    That is your Electronic Control Module (ECM) and they can fail as yours probably has.
    I, too, have a '99 FLHR and mine failed this year. I replaced it with a single fire Crane unit. It wasn't a straight swap, as I had to manufature a mounting bracket for it, but I get FAR better performance with the Crane than the stock unit.

    Do you have the service manual?

    Large finned alum with 4 wires is your voltage reg. this would not cause your starter problem. Clean all the oil out of it and lets find the starter prob. Could be several things. 1. Starter sw at handle bar,2. Starrter relay. # soliniod on starter moter. If as you said that when you jumper the moter that bike will start i am asuming that you are jumpering to the "C" term on the motor. its the spade conn on the left side of starter has a single green wire to it. if thiis wworks then try the relay it is under rt side cover next to the ECM wires to it are Tan, should be a 12VDC constant, Green w red trace, 12VDC when relay is energized, Black with red trace 12VDC when starter button is pushed Last is black, this is the ground for relay must be less than 1 ohm res. If 12VDC is missing on the B/R wire then wiring ing bars is prob where the problem is. Have Bars been changed if their any taller than stock IE< apes then wires are suspect also did you just wash bike ? if water gets in to switchs this can cause problem till they dry out. Tech tip when washing never squirt hose directly at or into the switch housings this will cause multiple problems till they dry out. Good luck and keep me posted.

    This has an ECM even though its carburated? I need to get a shop manual, I will go get one tomorrow. Thanks to everyone, D.L.

    that will be the most important tool you can put in your tool box!!!!! the second would be the parts manual....it shows how the parts go together...incase ya drop something and wonder which way it goes back together..:)

    David,

    Once you jump the starter the engine will fire and run?

    If so you need to check voltage on the wire leading to the starter, disconnect the green wire, hook up a multimeter (you can get one at any parts store or home despot/ lowes etc and they are handy if you are going to do any work on the bike (or you home appliances etc.)

    Turn on the ignition, ground the meter, touch the red wire to the tang in the connector on the green wire and check for power when you press the start button, no power, then you have either a break in the circuit (green wire) or the switch is bad, or the wire going to the switch.

    Now you can open up the housing by the throttle grip and inspect the wires if nothing is broken follow the wires back to the connector to the main harness, with the SM, see which wire delivers power to that switch then with the power on, check for power at that point. If you have power at the connection coming off the main harness, and no power at the green wire you have a break in the circuit and it's probably a bad switch (inspection of the wires to determine nothing is broken.)

    You can buy a new switch and replace should get you going...
