Nice shot of the SR71. They decommissioned them a year or to ago. Most of them were up at Beale AFB near Marysville, CA. They're mostly a recon plane without weapons if I remember right.

It was a very high performance spy plane.

Heard about a story that was being told in referance to their speed.... Keep in mind that they fly 70K feet or more??!! And they were mach XX think maybe mach 5ish??!! anyway, guy asked how fast they flew....pilot basicly told this story instead of talking speed, as most people would not be able to comprehend that kind of speed....

If the plane was flying over the USA west to east....and hit the western Nebraska boarder, and at THAT moment, the pilot decided that he needed to turn around.... by the time the decission was made AND we was able to make the course change, and would then be pointing 180 degrees, they would have flown across nebraska, Iowa, and most of Illinois before being pointed 180 degrees back west..... Just to turn around.....now THAT is fast.

Also, from what I understand due to the excessive speeds that they flew and the expansion of the metal due to the heat generated, they would fuel the plane at take off.....plane would be leaking fuel all over, would fire up, take off, then hit the mid-air refueler to top off as they would have lost 1/2 of their gas due to take off and leaks on the ground.... with full tank of gas, they would then accelerate to speed, metal would expand and all leaks would close.

We have an SR 71 Blackbird on static display at Lackland...is VERY cool.
