Air Cleaners and EFI

    If you have read any of my previous posts, you are starting to realize I am not a motor whiz!!!! But I want to learn, so here we go again......

    I read alot about the best air cleaners for carburated twins, but what about the newer EFI model Harleys? If I put a high performance air cleaner on my FLSTFI, will I need to do a re-MAP? Also, what does anyone think on what air cleaners are best for the 88B?

    Screaming Eagle and Ness both make good quality high flow air filters for EFI. There may be others, but those 2 I know of. If you ONLY do air filter you should not need to re-map...if you loosen up the exhaust with free flow (slip-ons or full exhaust), then YES, you will want/need to remap using either Power Commander (PCIII) or Screaming Eagle Race Tuner (SERT). There are other tuners out there also, but these seem to be the most common and effective out there right now.

    I would assume the same holds true if the exhaust was changed to the 2 into 1 config? I will be soon looking at a Wide Glide that has been changed to a 2/1. Does the performance degrade enough to know if it has been properly remapped after the exhaust swap?

    with an exhaust change 2 into 1, WITHOUT changing to high flow air box, you may still be ok.....2 to 1 will give more performance then true duals, or crossover, so would recommend for best performance change the air box and get it tuned. With the pipes change only, you may not have to change map/tuning, but depends on your bike, be aware that you MAY have to tune, but maybe not.

    Thanks AFN, So it may be good as is, but if the higher flow intake hasn't been done, it should be to get the most out of everything. What's the cost of a retune balkpark at?

    if no high flow intake, then would need that for best effect. Cost to custom map a power commander or race tuner could be around 350$.....remember is IS custom...for your bike, on a dyno. may be more, may be less...depends on the shop.

    If air filter has not been done, you shold still be able to run it without, just not optomized until retuning (with or without new air box.)

    Oh, and remember, I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last nite.....so look for input from others also!!:roflmao:

    Last time I stayed at Holiday Inn I was asked to leave for bringing my bike into the room. I sleep better that way! Guess the next time I'm in Gunnison, CO I'll find a nice tree and sleep there with the bike!

    HD SE are not reuseable, no reason to repay the piper for more air, Ness is like K&N washable, new backing plate, more air, better deal, plus Arlen has to make payments on a Rolls so he needs the money

    If I were to do this I would suggest some mild slip ons like Khrome Werks HP + slip ons, tapered or slash cut, good deep sound and not expensive.

    Combine that with a powercommander, get it tuned by a professional tuner, no uploaded map will be spot on. Then you'll be good to go.
