almost there . . .

    Well, boys, I finally put the ol' shovel motor back together after 8 months of rebuilding. I started it up the other day for the first time to begin break-in. She ran about a second before the tranny jumped out of neutral and into gear. Good thing I didn't let go of the handlebars - it stalled out after lurching forward a couple inches. I rechecked the clutch, made sure it wasn't grabbing. I kicked it over again and the same thing happened. The bike did this a few times last year, but never twice in a row. I decided to pull the tranny and it now sits on my bench. Expensive paperweight lol.
    If anyone out there is willing to look into this transmission, please contact me. I am through trying to fix it myself.

    That sucks on the trans Josh, glad you got the engine straight,
    sure sounds like a clutch problem, have you checked the throw out
    bearing on the main clutch rod shaft under the cover, sure sounds
    like that is the issue, you don't have a spring plate in the clutch pack
    do you, when it goes that's exactly what it does...

    For a clutch, I have a hodge-podge of mixed parts; Barnett friction discs, Alto spacers, BDL basket & front pully. We think the problem is the timing and not the clutch. I'm using one of the older style throwout bearings - sort of looks like a bell shape, used on '75 and earlier trannys - ball bearings and much better than the flimsy thrust bearings made in later years.

    When I took the tranny to Tattoo yesterday, we discovered that the washer & "C" clip had come off the end of the release lever shaft. Luckily, they were still inside the kicker cover when I took it off for inspection, and no harm done.

    Looks like I'm on my own here with this tranny. Can't find anyone to work on it. I'm looking at YouTube videos and trying to get a better idea of what to look for . . .

    I've replaced several, rebuilt one, as long as you have the
    tools it's easy, without them it's a pain...

    Good luck don't know any tranny builders myself...

    Can you run an evo trans, I know it's not "period" correct
    and won't have a kicker, will even have GASP! a starter LOL

    You'd have a more reliable unit, spend more time riding not
    wrenching and your knee will be happy, I get the kicker thing
    but since it's kicking your ass, screw it, sell it to some young
    shop owner that wants to build a custom kicker and maybe trade
    it for an evo trans, I bet you could come out ahead, with a starter
    and be on the road not in the shed...

    An Evo tranny :eek: I think I'll pass on that idea. I have found that there are a lot of instructional videos on 4 speeds. Still studying . . .

    Evos are just evolution of shovel transmissions, with better parts....

    Would'nt you rather be riding the bike than the shop chair LOL

    I found some tutorials on you tube on rebuilding the tranny and they made me think I can do it myself. I have already started tearing it down and in the process, retimed the lid correctly. Got nothing to lose at this point. Discovered that my pesky seal leak (after three times trying to fix it with a new seal) is caused by worn mainshaft & bearing - about 1/32" movement side to side! So I have to take it all apart anyway.
