Hey all, just joined. Kind of freakin out... heard from some friends that I'm probably voiding my factory warranty on my 09 Nightster by installing pipes, intake, and power commander myself. If anyone knows for sure I would love to know! Thanks:confused:

you are not voiding warranty. IF somthing happens to the bike, they have to prove that the installation caused the problem. dealers do the same thing you are doing everyday, with no warranty issues.

Technically, yes, you are violating the terms of the warranty, but as Chuck said, dealers do it all the time. But they will play games with you, such as you didn't buy the bike here, and/or we didn't make the modifications, so we will not honor the warranty.

Chuck's right that technically it would have to be proved that this or that modification caused this or that failure - but, see how far you get with that @ a dealer. I'm not a "licensed attorney" so I can't give legal advice, but this "legalese" stuff I have been looking up since 1991.

What it boils down to is how well do you know your dealer? Does that dealer consider you to be a good customer? The terms & conditions of the warranty are written, but a particular dealer may let you "slide" if there's a problem.

You may want to look up details as they pertain to the Magnusson Moss legal thing......don't know all the details, but think it basiclly states your warrenty can not be voided without just cause etc...... know that you can't void your warrenty by changing your own oil and such...not sure how far it pertains to this.

Yesterday I spoke to Harley mechanic that has broke away from the Harley dealership that he used to work for and opened his own shop because he didn't like how Harley would do the customers in this same situation. It seems that the dealer was okay with honoring the warranty but that Harley was refusing to honor or pay for the warranty work when it ws discovered that modifications had been done regardless of who had done them. I told the dealer that I did my own maintenance and he said that it would still be a good idea to keep receipts of where I had bought the oil, filter, etc.

Reckon how much the Harley dealer will charge to dyno the air? I guess that would be two dynos too - one to see where you are with the air you have and the second to see where you got to with the air they put in.

I was told to take my PowerCommander out if I ever took it to the Stealership. Luckily I haven't had any problems.

Take a day off of work and go to yer Harley dealer and ask them what you can or can't do . They will be glad to tell you everthing not to do so you don't VOID yer WARRANTY.
Take a PEN Adn PAPER so you make sure you WRITE EVERTHING Down.
If'n you don't wait too long, Harley will even sell you a EXTENDED WARRANTY.
They even have one that if'n you break down you can be put up in a MOTEL room. Now DON'T that sound NICE !
And they will come and TOW yer bike to the DEALERSHIP for you while a factory trained Harley mechanic uses original Harley parts and works on yer motorcyle in the air conditioner.

A lot depends on the dealership. I told the dealer I bought my Ultra from what I was doing and it was no problem . I installed all of the stuff myself for the stage 1 and they cover it. But I would say from what I hear from others that the dealer up here is unique. He operates the dealership under the rule the customer is king and it makes a lot of difference.

That sounds like a nice dealership to have in yer area. Wish there was more of them out there. This sounds like a model dealership. They deserve supporting.
They should be more customer friendly, especially when you spend about 20,000 with them.
A lot of the dealerships does everything by the book and won't cut you much slack.
