My buddy has a 1997 Softail custom. It's never had any major engine work. It does have a cam, S&S carb and straight pipes.

He began hearing a new noise last weak. It sounds like it is coming from the rear of the primary and sounds like a light knocking. We checked the chain and it doesn't have any excessive slack or anything. We also checked it with a stethescope. It appears to be the loudest on the lowest bolt on the right side of the derby cover.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Dave

sounds like something in the clutch or final drive sprocket. are all tight?? any loosness or freeplay?? good bushings and bearings? basket? plates? ya just need a bit more investigation. also look for wear spots. look behind the primary where the final drive is. have fun and keep us posted
