I have a 113" motor in a 06 Road Glide. I at first thought it was the gas that was causing a (pre ignition) ping when I gas on it, up hills or when I got the ol'e lady with me. When I put additive in the tank it goes away, but I noticed that on my temp gauge it's running around 230 or a little better. It made me think (a little) I never paid much attention to it till I was reading something on this site and never had this problem with this bike till now. An oil cooler may or may not be the problem here with fuel injection. I have a Race Tuner and Dynos are expensive and so is a Thunder Max fuel management system. I recently moved to a different state but the elevation is within a coupe hundred feet. Whata ya think?

the ping is from gas....or lack of... different suppliers have different additives. try changing brands in your area. is the percentage of corn different where you are at now???

    I like Chevron, Exxon, shell,
    What's yer compression ratio ?
And how new is the motor. Is it broke in yet........

I would even think about gittin some Header pipes with a oxygen sensor holes and puttin a Thundermax with Auto tune on it.
It will read the AFR's from the 02 sensors and add more fuel when it runs lean.
And it will adjust the map accordingly. This will help cool the bike off too.
I had a race tuner and had some of the same problems yer talkin about.

And don't git the 50 state legal model either. That one is just for CAlifornia.

When I had the thundermax on my 07 Wide Glide if I remember right it ran around 185*
See what Hotroadking things about this too............

The problem could also be in the way they set your race tuner when they set up it up. I had a bike that was set up with a Race tuner (nothing wrong with them) but when they put it on the dyno they set it for max power. That caused it to run a bit lean and it would ping, especially under a load situation. I was adding additives which did help but should not have to do that. Plus it was running hot like yours. I took it back in and told them what was going on so they re-adjusted it, setting it a little richer. No ping, ran cooler and the fuel mileage was still at 42-45. It could be the gas but I would check that the tune was not set to lean first.

    You have the SERT?
    Screaming Eagle Race Tuner?

If so contact Steve at mastertune, they are the software company
that wrote the SERT, and upgrade it to the latest software for Mastertune

TTS - MasterTune EFI Programming Software, go to the Harley Page, click on Upgrade, or go to the order page and the phone number is there. The new software is an improvement and you'll get
    a new dongle (interface).

    Couple of things,

Quality of the fuel - % Ethanol
Octane (you added some boost and it helped)
    Temps of the engine
    Timing.

You can check with Steve there at TTS, and talk about the auto tune features of the Mastertune (SERT) for your 06, You might be able to do some data runs, find the ping area and go into the timing map and pull it back a few degrees and fix the problem

It's a great program, be happy to help.

Sorry it took me so long to get back here. I just keep dumpin additive in the tank for a quick fix. I was thinkin about doin just that but all this runs into a lot of money. Come next year there is rumor that this state is going to 20% ethanol (I hope it's just a rumor). I've got a carborated bike thats doin the same thing, but it has 10.5 compression and the glide with the fuel injection has 10.0 The motor is way broke in 18,000 or so miles on it. I like to run 76. there's a place here (76) that has no sticker or postings anyplace about additives in there gas. I figure I just as well off fueling up there when I can. Thanks

Sorry it took me so long to get back to ya. I had me another bike with a race tuner to. It had 10.5 pistons in it and the pinging problem was a nightmare. This bike has 10.0 pistons in it. I went with more inches instead tryin to dodge this problem, it's not near as bad as my other bike was. Every time I put a bike on the dyno it end's up costing me way more money than I have. Till then I've got to keep doin what I'm doin. Thanks
