bad vibrations

    1997 flht 88000 kms engine total rebuild still have very bad vibration at 1000 to 2300 rpm even when not in gear. could it be steering head bearings ? or any thing anyone has had before ????

    I totally fail to see how steering head bearings could cause an engine vibration. Might should have had someone balance the crank when you rebuilt it, if they didn't. A 97 is an evo, so there's no counterbalancer to get mis-timed. Boy, that'll cause some vibs, I know this. :D Explanation, wasn't my screw up...:D

    Check for loose motor mount bolts. Check the rubber in the mounts out very thoroughly. I'm laying odds on motor mounts causing it for some reason or another.

    Check the exhaust system on rubber mount bikes the pipes move with the motor. Also the top and bottom stabilizers may be worn as well as the motor mounts. Have you checked the primary chain and related parts? Dutch

    Vibration

    At 115 you have a vibration? When you hit 115 hold the clutch in to see if it goes away as your rpm's drop, or if it go's away as your speed drops. If it go's away with your rpm's, its most likely internal. If it go's away as your speed drops, You may just need some wheel balancing.

    I know this sounds stupid but I've seen it happen before so I feel obligated to mention it. Sorry to sound insulting but here goes. Have you double checked the air pressure in the tires? Also have the wheel bearings been done recently?

    I had a friend who had been riding for many years and claimed to have checked all the obvious things with a similar vibration problem. He brought it to my garage and we replaced the bearings in both wheels since they hadn't been replaced since he bought it in 1991. Before I took it for a test drive I checked the tire pressure. They were both very low. I aired them up and everything has been fine since.

    I'm still not sure which was the actual problem but I suspect the air pressure had a part in it since the bearings looked and felt pretty good.
