Balancing New Tires

I was told that HD puts a mark on the wheel rim to indicate where a new tire should be alligned when it is mounted on the wheel.
Can anyone confirm this and add some additional info.

I don't know about HD tires, but aircraft tires have a mark that is either aligned with the valve core or aligned opposite of the valve core, depending on whether you are running tubes or tubeless (I forget offhand which is which). I would bet motorcycle tire manufacturers do something similar.

Being there are some long time wrenches on this website, I bet you'll get a more confident answer soon.

Tire Balancing

Most tires have a DOT painted on the sidewall. This DOT is at the lightest position on the tire. The DOT should be lined up with the valve stem, which should be the heaviest point on the rim.

The Dot

I mounted my REAR METZLER 880 MARATHON w/the dot at the valve stem.I took the tire/wheel to my local dealer(H-D) & was told that was correct how I mounted it.Hope this helps.
