I have an opportunity to purchase a used Barnett Scorpion clutch from a fellow rider. He said that it is hardly used. Would you buy a used clutch? Those clutches are basically completely rebuild able? Yes?

    Thanks

Yes except for all sets of springs. As of now it has the silver springs in it. Which is probably what the Sportster will need.

He is asking $375 for it. I am going to offer $325 I think but if he balks at it I will pay the $375. That is a good price for that clutch.

Rule of thumb up here JB,used parts go for 50% retail....quick search showed me they run about $550USD...half would be $275.....

You should pay less than $300. Remember, you're not getting all the spring sets, either. I'd find out what happened to them.

That would be important... lol....Amazon link I posted was for a BT 98-06...and...
I'd want the box and extra springs that came with it...If it was barley used and not in use,it should be in the box with all the parts...If not my offer would go way down or disappear altogether...Lots of clutch kits that'll increase surface area and a heavier spring for a couple hunnred and you use your original hub and basket and save buying and pressing a hub bearing...Hub bearing up here 10 yrs ago was $55-60 too

I ran a Rivera pro clutch on my 124 it's the only thing that would hold it with the stiff spring to boot

Come to think of it, I wouldn't buy a used clutch anyway. Almost the same as buying a used toothbrush to me LOL. I'd spend the extra money and get a brand new one with all the parts. One of the things I bought new for my scooter was the clutch.

Yeah I understand your thoughts here Josh, however I have had great experiences with buying used parts and using them. I have found that bikers who are selling stuff over the forums are pretty honest people. My Glide has some used parts in the drive train.

I have had good experiences, too. I got my used CV carb from HarleysLR 3 or 4 years ago and it is a fine carb. Upgraded it with a kit from CVP. All in the family here.
Well, I hope it works out for you. The Scorpion clutch is one of the best.

I going to see if I can get this cheaper than his asking price. I will pitch $275 for it, if he balks at it, then I guess I buy a new one.

Yep, I do think that a new clutch is inevitable. I just readjusted the clutch and all is good until I am in 5th at about 65 mph and it slips. I am going to take it to my wrench and see if he confirms my diagnosis. What a PITA!

Heck just replace the clutch dude.
Pull the primary and replace it.

    Quit playing around with it.

No. in this I want to make darn sure this is what is going on. it could be a cable that needs replacing as I am near the end of the the adjuster.
