I have a 1980 FXE Superglide, had a 1.5" primary belt, broke belts over the years, so I changed out to a BDL chain kit. Problem now is the starter clutch gear jamms up. I checked the starter alignment, its good sitting on both pins. I have an 11 tooth pinion gear and 66 tooth ring gear. Any ideas?

I have no ( been there done that) to help, oldest I had was a 94 evo. Give a better description of jamms up, Did you talk to BDL, could the tensioner have over adjusted? If that is a possibility you will tear up a shitz load of parts/ bearings if you continune to ride . Return to the scene of the crime and work forward from there. Good luck

I did talk to BDL, said their units run a 9 tooth pinion gear, I pulled my starter out and checked it, it sits on two pins on upper casting, tight, no slop with shaft. Removed one of my inner primary nuts to see if any play there, but none, it fits tight. Does seem like a fitment problem, close, but not close enough! I'll keep tinkering! Thanks for any feed back.

did you swap to a 9 tooth as they called for? Is the ring gear part of the new chain drive?

They don't make a 9 tooth for my year, and yes it is part of the new drive setup.

even if the diameter is the same, the spacing for the teeth would not be the same inho, this would cause a bind that would hang the drive in the ring gear. would be like trying a 4.10 pinion and a 3.70 ring gear in a auto diff.

is the ring gear a bolt or press on as another option to match?

Sounds like mis matched gear sets, you might have to drill out your ring gear from the stock clutch basket and put it on your new clutch housing if you are using the stock pinon gear.

What does the manufacturer say about the mixing of gears do they offer a replacement pinon, if not and you can't change your starter gear then you'll need a different ring gear on the new clutch basket.
