so i am about to have my 73 shovel's 16" 16 spoke cast wheels chromed. new bearing and spacer kits are only $30 each...so why not go ahead and change them. $300 for a one time tool is a bit much, so i shopped around. found a puller that looked like an easy build. round plate with flat sides to allow access through the race. i made one this evening...fit perfect. it was made with 3/16" plate steel, and large washers to back it up. bent the crapp out of it. i have resolved to let local boswell shop remove and install new races. what the hell though...them puppies are in there reel gewd. i am not comfortable putting new bearings against old races. what say the wrench gurus ??

if the old races are in good shape & close to the right thickness as the new one s your good to go , I have in the past had to run the old races , as long as there not all pitted or mared or worn thin

They are all but impossible to remove. I changed out one set, but the only way to accomplish it at my place was to use a dremel tool and cut/destroy the old races. Putting the new ones in wasn't so hard. Just put them in the freezer a few hours and tap them in quickly.

On top of looking for pits and scores look for discoloration as in burned. Any condition that isn't bright and shiny they gotta go. Best is new ones. No worrying and longest life. Just saying!

Would of taken it to the INdy shop too. And like HRK said, you replace the race with the bearing, ALWAYS.
    They mate together.

my goodness...what a response. races look brand new, no discolor, wear or signs of wear. i will not shortcut on such a crucial part though. i think i will let boswell look at them. i will sleep so much better.
i want the mating process to last as long as possible...:p

Take your (or borrow a friends) mig welder and put a weld on the face of the race. 4 welds @ 12, 3, 6, 9-o-clock positions. turn up the heat, the race is hardened. the welding will shrink the race and it will come out (small amount of convincing may be needed).
