I read recently that the Feds are including Mopeds in their accident reports - with the number of Mopeds mulitipyling at a crazy rate do you think they should be included in the Hiway safety report or put in their own class?

    mopeds have no class LOL

should be separate, most mopeds are
first time riders, small commutes, heavy on city
    traffic

They shouldn't, and the key word again is "class". If you're talking moped and not scooter (which may require a license depending on the size), they don't require licensing, so why will anyone take a safety class? So no chance of education and the complete lack of understanding that getting run over on a 49cc two-wheeled vehicle is just as bad as getting run over on a 1449cc two-wheeled vehicle.

I'm the first one to accept the risk of riding without a helmet, but when I see some fashionable chick out there with her sandals and short pants and designer sunglasses and no helmet, it freaks me out. Especially when they get in the lane and can't keep up with traffic. Even out of the lane, they're going to get mowed down at some point.

Friends sister died the other day from a long illness and he called today to see if I was working. Nope, OK I need to ride he said. Well we headed up into Washington state (today is in-between record rain storms). As we were crossing the I-205 bridge between OR and WA we come upon a guy riding a Scooter. Wished I had my camera, full face helmet, heavy coat but no gloves (well OK) low top tennis shoes with no socks and short pants.
I pulled up beside him and he looks over and I pointed to my boots and long pants then pointed back at him. He shrugs his shoulders like who cares. My buddy Loren pull up beside him and does the same thing. The guy then flips him off and my bud Loren starts laughing at him. If he ever goes down then he'll wish he had em .
The ride went pretty good and 15 miles from home the rain hit and man did it come down.

You'll see a few riders here in shorts and tennis shoes

When it's 95+ everyday it's friggin hot in a helmet, leather jacket and full jeans and boots.

Maybe so, but when you hit the pavement in shorts, well you know the rest. Even when its 100 degrees (if it ever gets that warm again) I will always wear boots, long pants and T-shirt with long sleeves. The leather coast is a bit to warm. I do have a vented jacket that offers protection but allows the breeze to pass through.

I agree don't ride in shorts anyway
jeans and usually boots but I've been
known to toss on some boat shoes (slip on top siders with rubber soles)
for a quick run to the mini mart.

In Minnesota, you have to have a license to operate a moped and or a scooter. So in my case, yes I think that the accidents and fatalities should be included in statistical reports. As far as other states, I guess they can make up their own rules.

Most of the states don't require you to even title a moped - and most of the people riding them don't have a clue about bike safety - but once they catch the bug for 2 wheels the next step is to a bigger bike. Think about it; how many of us started on a mimi bike or a off road bike then bought a real ride.
To classify mopeds with road bikes is like comparing a row boat to an ocean liner. the mopeds should held in a seperate class when reporting stats to the feds.

I don't really care one way or the other if mopeds are in the reports or not. I guess I figure riding on the roads on two wheels is good enough for me. I've often waved to moped or scooter riders, and even bicyclists (but those folks gotta wave first).

But I am an exception - my very first motorcycle owned & road) was a Yamaha XS750 - not exactly a minibike, moped or scooter........

Other side of the coin could be that the ratio of accidents to ownership is low due to low use?

If so then it wouldn't hurt.

Frankly it just sounds like another way for Govt to intrude finding fault with
moped accident rates an then instituting new license rules and fees...

It also inspires BIG Brother to work closer with the special interest groups that will try to use the STATS to take away more of our freedom. In this case - a federal helmet law, higher ins., restrictions on right of way useage and loss of acess to public lands.
Anybody who has read the background of history should realize that this is how one becomes a socialist state.
What's next ? - Gag orders on riders who want to have a say in how their country is run and by whom?

Report should be broken up (classed) by CCs/CIs and if possible rider age, as well as style of bike. Too many young & old idiots on crotch rockets around here doing foolish crap and getting hurt. I should not have to suffer legislation for them being braindead before they start their bikes.

Second I see a lot of OLD FARTS (which I am rapidly becoming one of) who have bikes WAY too big for them to handle effectively. One such rider about took out my front tire on a multi-bike ride for a cancer patient. A-hole driffed out of his track in a curve and came across my front. He just about dropped in it two different parking lots that day as well. Simply didn't have enough leg strength to hold up the weight of his bike and passenger. After that I stayed away from him and his bike, went tailgunner and kept my distance, until we got to final destination. That pretty well done it for me and benefit rides, screw that I will give money and let them strangers ride together.

Had the same problem when I was on the Mayor's ride last Sun. only it happened to the guy behind me. We had just pulled into the staging area and the dude ran into the back of his bike trying to park. Anytime I go on one these runs I always try to get in the front or stay way in the back away from the unskilled riders. The guy that ran into my partner had just finished a MS course and was new to riding. He probably slept thru the course too.
