I have the opportunity to buy a 1996 BMW F650 that has been idle for over 12 months. What problems can I expect?

you'll have to drain the fuel out ,most likely clean the carb's out , I would change the oil as well , double check the tire for dry rot , cracks in the side walls ect good luck & let us know if we can help :D

im with cowboy. crapy fuel them bmw are pretty good bikes ! maybe some one was smart and put stabil in the fuel and other than dumping the oil and filter she might just be fine take a sniff in the tank if the fuel dont smell like varnish give it a start.that ethanol has a shelf life of two months before it starts to drop btu . and octane also drops very quick ! so make sure you take a sniff . ethanol is very bad for storage. if it is not stabilized. ethanol pulls moisture in its hygroscopic . and we vent are tanks to fresh air bad juju!!!! good luck . and like the texen said we are here to help.

After that many years of just sitting the fuel has probably turned to syrup and yea you'll need to get it all out of the tank, lines and carbs. Change the fuel filter to. Good luck with it.

Yeah but if you guys have 10% alchol in your gasoline like many states, water, seperation of the mixture, and possibly rust from the water the alchol absorbed could be an issue. It is a problem up here with boat storage for only several months.

Yea read it wrong but even at 12 months I would dump
the gas and clean out the system like Cowboy suggested. With the gas we get today it won't last that long.

When you get it running give the cooling system a GOOD cleaning and use a low phosphate antifreeze they eat water pumps check the little breather hole on the left side lower engine case on the front and look for corrosion there are 2 seals inside that housing that can fail and DO. don't ask how i know it is one reason why I'm riding a Harley love the air cooed motors.BMW told me that mine was a one off thing.Go the the chain gang site and look up cooling systems and bring your lunch it's a long list. other than that small problem they are bullet proof.
