    British Motorcycle History

Bicycles had become a popular mode of transportation in Britian in the late 1800's. During the same time the internal combustion gasoline engine was being invented. Many designs of motorized bicycles appeared around Europe. They quickly evolved into the motorcycle and became a very popular mode of transportation that spread over Europe and America.

During the few years before the motorcyle industry was born moto enthusiasts in Britian built single and multiple cylinder motorized machines in every possible layout. Each one tried different combinations of design in the drive system with chain, shaft and belt drive for front and rear wheel drive. To handle the rough roads telescopic and girder forks were designed. Motor controls included kickstarts, electric starters, twist throttle, multiple gears, and more. Seating, fenders and stylish items distinguished the various models.
