My winter project is to install a gear drive cam in TC 95.

It's a 95 cid 2004 FLHR. It has a SE 204 cam, SE piston, stock heads, HSR 45 carb, and SE Ignition.

I know there are lots of opinions out there. So I'm soliciting.

I ride solo 99% of the time as my wife has a Heritage. I do carry a lot of crap when I travel, but it's probably not as much as riding 2 up. My wife does on rare occasion ride with me.

I'm leaning toward the 26G. I put the 37G in my wife's FLSTC, and she's real happy with it. Local Indy shop recommended the S&S 501. Even though I tour a little, around town is where most miles are put on as it's my daily rider(although I plan to retire next spring and change that ratio).

Next...I plan on installing my self. I understand that checking crank run-out is important. I do not have a dial indicator to accomplish this. Is there a reasonable source for what I would need to measure the run-out?

I'm sure I could find all these answers buried in the past posts somewhere, but just asking again is way easier. :D Thanks

You will be able to find a dial indicator at Harbor freight very reasonable, I think I have seen the dial indicator itself for around 5 dollars but the stand is more, I think you will like the 26s, if your runout is to much you can also switch to the new style hydraulic tensioner and then you have the added benefit of a larger oil pump, Todd

You need to measure crank runout, it's a problem with many of the later HD's big article by Donny Peterson explains whys and hows in AI

Basically for gear drives you want .001 to .002 runout, HD now thinks .020 is acceptable. at that you can't run gears period.

the cams you are talking about really don't need gear drives.

IMHO you should consider investing in converting the cam plate, cams and parts over to the 06 and up parts that come in the new hd's.

There are no cam plate bearings to buy or install, it's easier and the new tensioners are a piece of cake, I'd say it takes out half the work and problems

Now haveing said that the stock tensioners are up to about 30 k before you find you need to replace them on most bikes.

I'd just replace the tensioners, polish the outer edge of the chains and put in the cams you want.

Also I'd go woods tw-6 cam over the 37B or 204's better tq better cam design.

Thanks for the replies. Before my decision process goes much further I will get the dial indicator and check run-out. That could limit my other decisions right there.

I see there is another recent Thread about cam selection. I guess I should have gotten current on recent Threads before I posted.:D
