I just installed my cvp deluxe tuners kit and cvp rebuild kit along with an xlflow-s1 intake on my 2003 xl883h i used a 44 idle and 175 main and it has a serious carb cough even 3-4 turns out! i also noticed it will NOT start without the choke when its warmed up??? do i need a larger idle jet?

    thank you for the help

This really sounds like an vacuum leak either around the manifold boot, flanges, or even a leaking vacuum hose.

Get the leaks fixed then worry about the jets, once that is corrected you can start with checking the idle air mix screw to determine the pilot jet,

A buddy is telling me the setup i have will require a 46, 47 or 48 idle jet (im running a 44) besides the fact of any leaks does a 44 idle seem too small?

The CVP kit you are using (supported here) is already designed to work optimally with the suggested jets. Going larger in the jetting would only be required if compensating for vacuum leaks, which is counterproductive. Solve for the other problems which are not jetting related and you will find the jetting perfect.

Here are additional things to check if a vacuum leak is not detected.

It's really counterproductive in tuning to work on a bike with a glitch
don't tune or mess with the carb until the setup is right as far as operation no
vac leaks then work on one circuit at a time pilot, then needle, Main should be good
unless you really open up the engine...

Any auto parts store will have vacuum hose line. I believe it is 1/8 or something small like that.

IMO I wouldn't be running on the reserve until fuel is almost empty. The venting may be suspect here. If the vent inside the gas cap is faulty it will slow the flow of fuel to the bowl and eventually the carb starves for fuel and stalls during hard acceleration.
