I have a 2005 sportster 1200 Xl custom. I had straight pipes and had the
Jet size stated 45, 180. It ran pretty well, but when I added a
Stage 1 big sucker, the bike started ruining rough. I had to install a new belt and when I started my bike up a lot of black smoke was coming out of the exhaust. It also smell like gass. The plugs were very black. Thy guestion is should I go up in jet size or down? It's says I should go go 185, but if I getting black smoke shouldn't I go down in size. Any help would be great. Thanks

Your getting to much fuel to it now all a larger jet will do is make it worse. Is the choke stuck on, how far out is the main metering screw.

For your 05 1200 you will probably want to drop the main back to 180 and move the pilot up to 46. Readjust the mixture screw after. Tuning with drag pipes is always hit or miss since you lose so much bottom end torque with them.

Just to emphasize, a factory 1200 uses a different kit and needle than a 883 converted to a 1200. The heads are different and flow differently. Thought I'd throw that out there in case your model is not a factory 2005 1200.

The smell of fuel could be more than just jetting. A stuck float or float level set too high, or as mentioned a choke (enrichener) not closing or pulled out slightly.

Sorry guys using my iPhone I sometimes get typos. It's a 2006 not 2005. I will adjust the jet back to 180 and see what that does. Also how do you adjust the float level. I saw the article on how to check but how do you know if your at a 20 angle? Sorry I am knew to motorcycle. As for my clutch I only put it out on cold stats and it goes back in all the way as I get it warmed up.

Putting some type of baffle in will help a lot when it comes to tuning & power , you Can also check for intake leaks
