I have a 1975 XLH1000 Sportster and would like to get rid of the POS original Bendix Carb. I was told that a good replacement would be a S&S E-Serries Shorty. Is this a good replacement? Will there be any issues with Jetting it? Any input would be helpful. Thanks!!

SNS has a how to guide online for the Super E and how to jet it for any bike

It's a bit large for a sporty 1000 but can work.

Your other option would be to put a newer CV40 on the bike, and it's a cheaper option with better JMO throttle response than the E and probably a lot better mileage.

You can find take off CV40's all over the web boards and Ebay

I beleive you'll need to change the intake or find an adapter, backing plate, cover and filter with the cv, should be easy to do ...

    I'd go CV,

I had the bendex on my 73 shovel ,, tried S&S & another one that out back then I went back to the bendex & ran it for about 20 more years , just rebuild it & jet for your pipes & you should be good to go , or do as HRK said & go to the newer CV carb

I'd go with a CV carb conversion. Ironheads run great & are a lot easier to tune with a stock carb off a 1991-2005 Sportster & the later model big twins that came with a carb use the same one. No doubt find good ones on e-Bay, etc. & they're pretty easy to work on. You'd need new throttle cables & intake manifold, but all the parts to make the conversion are readily available (JP Cycles, Dennis Kirk, V-Twin catalogs, etc.) & that carb is a "set it & forget" it deal. 42 slow jet, 165 main & 2.5 turns out on the idle mixture screw would be the baseline & while the main may need to changed, I'd bet the slow wouldn't & jets are cheap. And once you get it dialed in, you're done - no more messing with the carb.

a 75 didnt have a bendix as the stock carb. it ran a keihin. the post ive read are all good suggestions for more power, but you do need to consider the rpm range you ride in. an adjustable mainjet bendix is hard to beat on any engine under 84 cubic inches for normal road use. top end use the S&S works fine.the best alround carb ive used is the flat slide.i prefer the lectron on single canle throttles and edelbrock for dual cable application. both were designed by the same man and when properly dialed in will outperform any carb on the market, past and present. i hope this ol man's opinion doesn't offend anyone.
