hello, i've got a 1983 yamaha virago XV500. i've done a few things to it including some single baffle mufflers (no balance tube, just two individual pipes) and i've switched from a pair of carbs to a single side mount CV carb. it's off a sportster 883. I have dropped the jet to a 140. a one 130 jet I can't keep the engine running at all. so i'm wondering if any engine tuning gurus would be able to help. I do still have a bit of sputter when i'm holding at a steady slow RPM. and there's a hesitation around 3-4000 RPM. wondering what would be the best size jet to go down to or perhaps there's something else i should adjust that would work just as good. as for air cleaner i've got the kyurakin hyper charger mounted on it. thanks in advance

I'd check for other issues first, if you can't get it to idle.

Have you checked the intake for leaks, perhaps it's not sealing
properly and allowing air in behind the carb.

It idles great and I can drive it. Its only with the 130 jey I cant do anything. I put the 140 jet back in and I am able to ride it. But now its the fine tuning of the carb ive gotta figure out. I know the basics of the cv carb. But not the finer points lol

well you took two carbs off and now your down to 1 . with that being said you need to feed it and make a big jetting diffrence to see a change , yes its only a 500 but with 4 valves per cylinder . i would start with a 170 and a 42 slow and go from there ,make sure the slide is working correctly

Confused in your first post you said you can't keep it running
Then you say it idles fine.

What size were they two you took off

Did you adapt a manifold to fit??First thing is make sure you have no intake leaks...Then start jets like BP said...find a good idle mix, about 2-3 turns out on mixture screw and no burps or farts when you goose the throttle, then road test... find the main jet...if you're smooth to WOT needle is probably close....back off about 1/4 from wide open...if it surges bigger main, if it feels flat,smaller...if the bike just slows a bit you're good...
