Just read an article by Donny Petersen in American Iron (Oct. issue) about oils for motorcycles. He states that oil companies don't make special oil specifically for motorcycles, only the packaging is different so they can charge more for it. His observations were verified by another petroleum engineer.

So it looks like you can buy regular car oil for a motorcycle at Wal-mart and save some money.

I'm gonna run a Vtwin air cooled oil

Call a oil company on the phone and talk with them. I tried runnin a car oil in my diesel truck and they said take it out. Its not for a diesel .

Different motorcycle oils break down at different temps.

But as long as you keep yer oil changed that is what is important.

You should be able to run oil for a diesel in your gasoline car but not the other way around. diesel oil needs an additive to protect against sulfuric acid that builds up in the crankcase. Diesel fuel has sulfur in it that gasoline does not have.

There is a mandated low sulfur diesel by EPA. It goes from something like 3,000 part per million sulfur in the past to 15 part per million. But this was done to prevent the oxidation catalysts from getting prematurely degraded by the sulfuric acid in the exhaust.

With low sulfur diesel fuel you would think any oil could be used, but you better be safe than sorry.

Oh yea yer goverment is trying to mess diesels up talkin the sulfur out.
    sulfur lubricates the engine.
Hope somehow in the future there will come a way to SUE the goverment for such things like this.
But I know things are only gonna git worst.
The EPA is going to cost a broke enonomy more and more jobs.:gah:

I wouldn't do it, but hey it's your bike.

One of the big difference is V-Twin oils typically do not have the friction modifiers found in automotive oils which lead to slipping in wet clutches. I think Donny Petersen is a great source of technical knowledge but at the same time he's not a chemist nor remotely involved in the API or other aspects of formulating lubricants. I haven't seen this article but I find it suspect coming from someone who has recommended several different brands over the years... maybe one of his endorsements pissed him off. I would agree that oils labeled by H-D are obviously made by someone else since Harley is not in the oil refining business but the idea that every company repackages auto oil for motorcycles is wildly speculative.

I've spent good money on my bike so a few extra bucks on quality oil isn't something I think twice about. I've been an Amsoil user for years but there are plenty of other quality oils out there. I think Cardboard posted this because he was trying to point out a source for getting a good quality synthetic oil that is easily accessible and I for one wouldn't hesitate to use it if I were away from home.

About everything HD has on their bikes and sells is made by somebody else..........

And Donny Petersons remarks like you said. He mighta made a mistake.
They only git to cram so many words in what they write. So he mighta cut some things out and it came out wrong.

Probably the refining process and the additives in the oils that makes them stand different from each other.

    The additives in the Oil
And when the additives wear out thats when the oil ain't as slick and you need to change it.
