I have a 02 sportster, and after taking it out after long winter storage, it will only run with the choke fully open. I also noticed the battery isn't holding a charge well. Could the battery be the cause of it only running at full choke???:witsend: I did have the battery on a trickle charger for the winter.

Ya might wanna run some fuel injection/carb cleaner through it before anything else. 'Might have some gunk in the carb or injectors. JMO

When you let it sit did you put any fuel stabilizer in the gas before storing it for the winter. How long did you let it run in other words did you allow for a warm up period. Many will need to be run for a couple miles before you can push the choke back in.
If its fully warmed up and still won't run without the choke then you'll need to open the carb up and clean it, could be gummed up inside from sitting to long. Get a Harley service manual to help you, they are worth it.

Could be bad gas, and could be that your carb float is stuck and you're flooding it. Either way, getting some carb cleaner fluid into it will help you figure it out. How long has it been sitting?

A bad battery can cause some weird symptoms, but needing choke is not a known one to me.

BaggerPaul is right, the gas screwed up the jets and or narrow passages. Happens all the time now when carbs sit with un-stabilized gas in them. Best thing for extended storage is run carb dry, drain float bowl drain gas tank and allow tank to breath so you won't get condensation in it. Short term storage, get some of the newer types of fuel stabilizer made for gasoline that contains alchol. Treat a FULL tank of gas and make sure the treated fuel gets into the carb.

    Marc:

Do you add some of that stabilizer with each full gas tank, or is it only during that winter
    storage that you use it???

I only put it in the Springer and the wife's trike during the winter. I ride the Ultra years around so no need to. I also add it to the riding lawn mower in the winter. No need to add it if your using it year around.

By the way I do like your flag pole in your yard, looks cool.:)

My old neighbor was a lifer Marine Sniper and helped me erect that
flag pole. It is 28 feet high and has 25 bags of pre-mix concrete that
are anchoring it into the ground, and so far the home owners association hasn't objected yet!

    Drain the carb,
    drop the bowl,
blow some compressed air through the main and pilot jets
a can of computer cleaning compressed air will work

wash out bowl with carb cleaner
drain the tank, put in all fresh fuel..

    Yer jets are clogged

POW'S don't get any attention or mention anymore! AND THAT'S A CRIMINAL SHAME!!!
Did you know that not only all the POW's in Viet Nam, Korea, etc. Eisenhower permitted
Stalin to take about 80k of our POW's back to Russia or so I'm told by one of the history
experts I know??? Eisenhower and his staff generals are the ones who assassinated
General George Patton by staging an accident with help of CIA and then when he started
to recover, they poisoned him. Read the great book by Wilcox: "TARGET PATTON"

At least your choke isn't choking you. :roflmao:
The stabilizer may not have made it into the interior of the carbie. Take it apart, clean and/or rebuild it.

I've never used stabilizer. I'll shut my gas off then run it till she dies. My bike is 14 years old this June 19th. I treat all my gas engines toys that way. Lawn mower power washer,,,, never an issue. I use seafoam in the tank.

Yup. When I know bike is going to be down a while, I shut the gas valve and run it until the carb runs out of gas. Won't take long. I use Seafoam. Kept a tank of gas for about 4 months without riding with Seafoam in it. Started it up and ran the old gas. No problem.
